Quote of the Day: Jessica Prentice

September 22nd, 2013

When you don’t grow up with a memory of something tasting wonderful, you sometimes have to work a little bit to learn to love it. There’s always a chance that you’ll never learn to like a thing, but you don’t know that until you really try.

Jessica Prentice – Full Moon Feast: Food and the Hunger for Connection

This is such a great quote, it rings true in my life.  Thankfully I grew up with a very broad palate of things I tasted.  Mostly do to the fact that I grew up in another country.  We learned to eat thing like beef tongue, liver, yucca and all sorts of things many people would consider unpalatable.

As a result, I’m very adventurous when it comes to trying new things.  In general, I have like almost everything I’ve ever tried, there are very few things that I don’t really like.  Well, except for frosting (aka icing).  Crazy, I know, someone who doesn’t like frosting.  Even as a kid, I’d scape my icing off my cake and give it to my brother, who loved it.

Cooked greens used to be the one thing that I had trouble eating.  I kept making them, we kept eating them, and eventually we learned to love them.  They went from being not very appetizing to being enjoyed.  Sometimes it takes trying things multiple times, cooked in different ways to find a place on your plate.

Do you have any foods that you want to learn to love?

You are not alone,I hate frosting too. I grew up disliking most meat, now I love it. I totally agree about the multiple tastings needed to like a new food. I wish I liked kale more, but I just keep growing and cooking with it anyway. I like that it is easy to grow and healthy.

I used to do the same thing with my brother as a kid–he ate the frosting, I ate the cake. Hooray for siblings!

Not even homemade, “from scratch” icing? I make a delicious chocolate butter cream frosting …

I’ll bet your brother was a happy kid! :)

Nope, not really even made from scratch icing, far too sweet.

I can’t stand frosting either! I didn’t even eat the cake at my own wedding because I don’t like cake. My mom started making Ina Garten’s chocolate cake recipe a couple years ago, and that one is edible, but otherwise, I always pass on cake. I am always jealous of people like you who try so many different foods. I’m such a picky eater that it often gets in the way of trying/enjoying new things.

I’m not much of a cake fan either.

I have to agree on the icing thing too. Cake is sweet enough. On the same vein, I have finally developed a taste for parsnips, as a child I could not stand the sweetness parsnips. Now since I grow so many for my milk cow for her winter feed supplement, I have learned to like them. Those beautiful roots were too handsome not to bring to the kitchen.

I really want to learn to love beans – I am trolling the internet for recipes, and have made a plan to eat small amounts of them several times a week. I like them in chili or soups, but I want to be able to eat them on their own.

Your idea is a good one. I recently read the book ‘French Kids Eat Everything’ after hearing the author interviewed on NPR. French kids are served a dish several times until they decide to like it. Their whole approach to food is so different than ours, it seems, and the result is a much better relationship with food, and a much healthier individual.

My daughter doesn’t like icing either or anything too sweet and still doesn’t as an adult. I wish I liked yogurt better. The tang puts me off. If I put lots of granola into it so that it’s sweeter I like it better.

I was never a big vegetable eater, however as I grow up I am trying my hardest to grow to love new foods. Kale and Beet greens are my new experiments!

Hurray! I thought I was a freak because I never really cared for birthday cakes as a kid. My mom would make one for guests but I would always pass. I’m probably the only kid that had to sit at the table alone until I had eaten all my dessert! I still scrape frosting off cake. Another thing that I still can’t eat is watermelon. It is such a pretty color and looks refreshing but the taste and texture revolt me. All melons really. I can’t even pick through fruit salad and eat the other fruit because they have been polluted by the melons.
