Friday Favorite: Yearly Traditions

September 28th, 2013

Almost 20 years ago I went away to college and met up with five lovely ladies. We instantly became friends, we were so close that we had a get together in the summer even when we were still in school.

Each year we meet, sometimes at one of our houses, sometimes we rent a cabin somewhere. It’s not every year that everyone can attend, some years there have only been three of us that have been able to make it. This year there will be five of us in attendance.
Weekend in Cincinnati 3
Even though I moved far away to Maine (the rest of the girls live in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky), I’ll be headed to Cincinnati today for this annual event. I’m really looking forward to spending time with these old friends of mine! We will have a great time laughing a lot, eating great food, and catching up.

What’s the longest lasting friendship you have?

33 years! There were six of us that have kept in contact all of these years (from college). We lost one of our group unexpectedly this spring to a heart attack, the youngest at 49. Her passing was an eye opener for all of us. While we saw each other individually, and occasionally as a group, and all spoke/emailed/wrote frequently, we decided it wasn’t enough, we wanted something that stood alone.

So we decided on a girls trip every year. We just had our first official, “get away from it all” in early September and had a wonderful time. It’s amazing how we always pick up like a day hasn’t passed :)

Can’t imagine my life without any of them. ‘Girl time’, on any level, is important in our lives as women.

My best friend from high school who now lives in VA vacations on the coast. This year she was in Stonington. She spent a day and night with me one week and then I spent a day down there with her. When we get together, it is like those almost 50 years since school don’t exist.

Love this! My daughter just started college and I am hoping she makes this kind of friends. I lost my lifelong best friend 8 years ago. She had a brain aneurysm burst causing a car accident on my 40th birthday and nine days later on my daughters 10th birthday her family decided to discontinue care per doctors advice. Her brother knew of her wish to donate her organs so she lives on in many others. Miss you always Janna Banana!!
I hope you all have a lovely time visiting and catching up!

I am still friends with my childhood neighbour we have known each other since primary school (a long time ago).
I also started writing to a pen friend in Africa in my early teens we still write some 30yrs later…we also now visit each other which just adds a great dimension to our relationship.

My best friend and I have known each other 38 years now. That kind of history makes for a special friendship. Enjoy your weekend.

My cousin Barb, who was born 6 months after me, and lived just down the road. We saw each other almost every day growing up. We see each other a few times a year now, but it’s always great to catch up!

Have a great friend from being a penpal since we were 16, we’re now 52. Never met in person but we still keep in touch. So that would be 36 yrs. I can’t afford to get away so just have to be content with writing. Many friends I had in HS live way different lives than I have so we don’t really get together. It’s good we don’t plan anything like you mentioned as I could never get away for more than a day and there’s no money for those type of things anyway as we must eat. Sounds like you had a great time in the past andwill this time. Safe travels.
