Quote of the Day: Monty Don

October 6th, 2013

“The garden at the beginning of October flatters to deceive. The sun still has the heat to warm through your shirt, still carries the tang of summer during the middle of the day. But no one is fooled. This is not the real thing but borrowed from summer, little more than a good memory. Autumn has arrived. The leaves are changing colour daily and the air has an almost tangible opacity you only find in autumn.”

It’s certainly starting to feel like fall around here. Plants in the garden are growing much more slowly and brown in becoming the dominant color. This year I’m happy for fall to arrive as I’m ready for a long winter rest.

What does fall look like in your garden?

In the main garden, the weeds are dying back so the kale stands like little trees and the carrots are now visible. The bean vines are dead. Squash and pumpkin vines are starting their decline so their fruit is becoming visible. The few remaining paste tomatoes are hanging in there. The ones that fall to the ground with spots go to the turkeys. And then there is the 10×10 plot where the garlic will go in another couple of weeks. The zuchinni vines were done and are on the burn pile which opens things up to see the remaining heirloom tomatoes. I’m so ready to clean it all out but first the last cord and a half of wood need to go in.

Susy, Fall is beginning to arrive here in Nebraska as well. Night time temperatures are dropping down to 30s with the threat of frost in the near future. The tree leaves have tried to hang on to summer but are starting to lose there green summer attire and the fall golden colors are bursting forth marking the fall season in full swing. It’s been a wonderful summer filled with accomplishments, disappointments, new friendships, and many ideas for next year. Garden cleanup begins this next week. Soon the midnight marauder (me) will once again cruise the neighborhood during the late night hours before yard waste pickup day abducting bags of yard waste for Terra Nova Gardens.

Have a great fall day in the garden.

Still looks pretty till the first frost and everything turns black and hangs like crepe paper.

I have my winter garden planted: carrots, tomatoes, 4 kinds of beans, Swiss chard, broccoli, 3 kinds of lettuce, leeks and sweet onions. Winter is as busy as spring/summer.
