Homeward Bound

December 7th, 2013

Last week we packed everyone up in the car and headed to Ohio to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. Lucy and Tara both went along, though with two large dogs in our small car we had to get a trailer to haul all of our clothing & supplies in.
Lucy & tara
Today we’re headed back to Maine with a car full of dogs and a trailer full of gear and venison.

Any holiday traveling last week or in December?

We’re leaving for Arizona on Christmas Day. Three hours to drive from our house to the airport, five hours on a non-stop flight, two more hours to get from the airport to my parents’ house. With two small children. Merry Christmas to our fellow passengers! I bet it will be a memorable flight . . .

LOL — that is SO great! My parents are in OH, and selling an elk shoulder mount that you could have taken back too :) Have a safe trip!

On Dec. 27, I will be traveling to upstate NY to finish up clearing out my Dad’s house in preparation for the sale closing. Even though I knew this day was coming, it won’t be easy. At least for the time being, I have him here in a fantastic facility just 3 miles down the road.

Colorado for Christmas! Trying to get presents all shipped there now so we don’t have to fly with them. That must have been quite a trip with both dogs! Welcome home. I love to travel, but coming home is always my favorite part.

Lucy looks like a very concerned back-seat driver!

She’s just mad that she was stuck so I could get her in a photo, she hates having her photo taken.

Susy, home is where my heart is this year. I haven’t traveled for holidays in many years. When the family is split in two different places it’s difficult to decide which to spend holidays with. Well, and then there is the financial aspect of it all. Times are such that travel just isn’t in the budget at holiday time. Helping three generations live life kind of busts the bank at this time of the year.

Looks like the dogs have taken to traveling just fine. Tara is getting over her fear of loosing her good home when traveling in the car? How did you deal with the raw food for the dogs while traveling. They had there own cooler of food?

It’s bitter cold here in Nebraska. Right now it’s -3 degrees with a high of 13 today and possible one inch of snow tonight. It will be crunch crunch in the snow tomorrow. As Kathi says, it’s always good to get back home after vacation. Now it’s time to get caught back up with things that didn’t get done while gone and begin the routine of homestead life once again.

Have a great brrrr cold day in Maine. If it isn’t there already, it soon will be.

Tara is doing better with traveling, she was anxious on her trip back, maybe she thought that was the trip to the new place. We did take a cooler full of raw food for the pups.

when our 2 kids were little we made the four hour trip to Dayton. Now that the grandparents are gone, and we are the grandparents, everyone makes the three hour trip from Kentucky to see us. Happy times!

This year we get to stay home, everyone will be here for Christmas, which presents its own challenges. However, being home for the holidays is very nice. The dogs look all tucked in and cozy. Safe travels to you both.

Boy, you’re not kidding! With dogs that size, you really DO have a car full of dogs with only 2!

We travel on Christmas Day, only to my sister’s house, which is 45 minutes from here, so it doesn’t really count. I’m not much of a Christmas decorator, and she IS, so it’s like going to a Christmas wonderland. :) I’m happy to let her do all the decorating and hosting of our extended family, and her husband my brother-in-law loves to do the major cooking, so my job is chief bottlewasher and I’m happy with that. I start the washing up as soon as dinner is done while my sister can relax with a slice of pie after all her hard work.

A trailer full of venison sounds delightful!

We do not travel. We do see family members before or after the holidays…..but neither sets of family is that far away….a little over an hour for either. Your dogs are just precious. Merciful travels for you and Brian and your furbabies.

We don’t travel anymore for the holidays and we like it that way. Chris usually volunteers to work so the guys with children don’t have to. Our older son has a family of his own many miles away; the younger one usually comes to us for a day. We usually gather local friends and celebrate with good company, conversation and food.

My most memorable holiday travel was the Monday prior to Thanksgiving eight years ago when a friend and I drove home from Oregon with two full-grown Great Danes in the back of her little Forrester. Fortunately they were both great travelers and somewhere I have a photo of them, very similar to yours, although both of mine were hams and loved to have their photos taken. Princess is gone now but Stella is still with us and and still loves to ride in the car.
