Getting Into the Holiday Spirit

December 10th, 2013

Back in Ohio, Mr Chiots and I always attending Christmas in Zoar to kick off our holiday season. We just missed the celebration, it was this past weekend. Instead, we attended the holiday open house at Montpelier the Henry Knox Museum. Our neighbor was playing bells during the open house, so we enjoyed listening to her bell choir as well.

We’ll be looking for a few more holiday activities to attend up here in Maine (so if you live up and have any recommendations let us know).

Do you attend any local holiday celebrations to get into the spirit of the season?

We attended the lighting of the Nubble Lighthouse a few years ago. Great way to kick off the holiday season.

We join the Messiah Sing, an amateur community event conducted by a friend, and Lessons and Carols the Saturday before Christmas.
We love to sing in the season!
Beautiful photos, I love seeing the unusual tree of cranberries? crabapples? and the stack of glass stands with the pineapple on top.
We use all winter greens and natural ornaments, this really inspiring.
    Happy preparations to you both!

I love the picture of the handspinner in costume! I’ve done demonstrations of spinning at local plantation homes, but never in costume. It’s so much fun to expose people to something they may have never seen in action, that was a daily activity for the making of all cloth years ago.

We usually drive around in the area looking at the Christmas lights. We have a few neighborhoods that compete to outdo one another in decking the halls (and the trees, and the bushes, and the sheds…)

In 43 years of living here, I still haven’t explored Thomaston. I think this is a good time to do it. Thanks for the preview.

Susy, the best we do is drive the neighborhoods looking at the light displays. Some people have been putting up decorations before Thanksgiving. The day after Thanksgiving is the official day when everyone fires up the lights. The new blow up snow globes are becoming more and more popular. They are quite fascinating for Bradley. I put up a puny display of lights on the poor man’s patio trellis this year. Actually, I waited too long and there’s no way I’m putting up lights with wind chills below zero.

Have a great holiday season day.

I was planning to attend my town’s ice house parade (the ice fishing houses are decorated and towed on trailers through town before being placed on various lakes), but I forgot on the afternoon of the event. I was pretty bummed when I realized that.

Victoria Mansion in Portland decorates for Christmas and is BEAUTIFUL. The Old Port in Portland is beautiful at night with all the lovely lights!

There are tons of festivals and craft fairs here to ring in the holidays, although we never seem to make it to them anymore now that my daughter is older and there is so much Irish dancing in the Christmas season.

This past weekend, we entered some friends from Irish dance into our little community’s Christmas Parade. Soon is the holiday recital and Christmas feis, and those have become our traditional Christmas events I guess.

We finally did make it to see the Nutcracker, but we are still wondering what it is that makes that a Christmas classic. :)

Hoping you have a lovely Christmas season.
