The Garden Year – a poem by Sara Coleridge

December 22nd, 2013

THE GARDEN YEAR
by Sara Coleridge

January brings the snow,
Makes our feet and fingers glow.

February brings the rain,
Thaws the frozen lake again.

March brings breezes, loud and shrill,
To stir the dancing daffodil.

April brings the primrose sweet,
Scatters daisies at our feet.

May brings flocks of pretty lambs
Skipping by their fleecy dams.

June brings tulips, lilies, roses,
Fills the children’s hands with posies.

Hot July brings cooling showers,
Apricots, and gillyflowers.

August brings the sheaves of corn,
Then the harvest home is borne.

Warm September brings the fruit;
Sportsmen then begin to shoot.

Fresh October brings the pheasant;
Then to gather nuts is pleasant.

Dull November brings the blast;
Then the leaves are whirling fast.

Chill December brings the sleet,
Blazing fire, and Christmas treat.

    Susy, December keeps me busy with Christmas cards. I send out about 20 special ones with personal notes to family and friends. Then there’s maybe 80 more that just get an update letter that highlights the activities from the last year. Composing the letter, printing the letter, assembling the card with the letter, addressing the card with address, return address, and stamps are all things that take about two weeks of pretty steady working before taking bags of cards to the post office to mail. People seem to enjoy getting a card from me as all through out the year when our paths cross, folks will tell me how much they enjoyed the card. My wife used to do all that and really was much better at it than I am. I have just continued the tradition and do enjoy the Christmas activity.

    I see from the weather report that you are in for another storm. I’m not sure how close you are to Interior Waldo Maine but seriously, possible 1/2 inch of ice on all smooth outdoor surfaces. That is a serious ice storm for sure. Time to put on the soup, hunker down, and enjoy the wood burning stove.

    Have the best weather endurance day that you can.

      I enjoy getting Christmas cards from friends with updates. This year however, I didn’t end up getting any sent out for myself, hopefully next year that will happen.

    I’ve been experimenting with bannetons ( bread proofing baskets). With some time off work for the next few weeks I’m hoping to get quite a few loaves made. I usually get a few good books for Christmas, so having some time for reading will be great too! Have you had any experience working with bannetons?
