Will You be Joining us Again?

January 29th, 2014

Well, it’s officially time to start talking about the 5×5 Challenge once again.  I’ve had a lot of people excited about doing it again this year and more that watched last year and are ready to jump in and start a garden this year.  I’ll be using my raised bed outside the front door again for this challenge, this year I’ll be growing different vegetables.  I haven’t decided which ones, perhaps you’ll have suggestions.

This year we’ll hopefully be joined by a few members of the tiny house community, Tiny House Magazine will be running an article about the 5×5 in the next issue.

This year we’ll continue with the same schedule, Wednesdays will be the challenge days. The posts here on Chiot’s Run will focus on garden education, tasks to complete in your garden, and updates on my 5×5 garden.

Who’s in? Did you do the challenge last year? Are you a new to gardening?

Each of my children will have their own 5×5 plot that they will plant, weed, and harvest this year. We are excited to incorporate this into our homeschool curriculum. As for myself, I will have my hands full with our 6,000 square foot garden and acre of organic corn, pumpkins, and mangels.

Susy, I think it’s great that you are inspiring so many to garden. Even a small five by five garden bed can grow allot of food. Any one that wants to try gardening can surely find 25 square feet in the yard some where. Who knows it just may lead to bigger things. I thoroughly enjoyed your challenge last year and the interaction even through I wasn’t a part of it. Hopefully, one day we will have a small garden in ever back yard. Wouldn’t that be awesome. Good luck with your challenge this year.

Have a great garden challenge promotion day.

I’m joining in! I love the concept. I agree with Nebraska Dave – who knows, the challenge could really snowball and may inspire many more people to give gardening a try!

Nope didn’t last year. I do gardening as I have time and a certain way and when to do things doesn’t work here. I have too much to do and doing something special and differnet isn’t doable here. I have 13 8X4 raised beds and have been gardening for about 32 yrs. now I think it is. My purpose is cheap organic easy gardening with lots of produce to put away each year. That with foraging keeps me so busy. Good luck to those who time for a special bed. Guess all mine are special as I put as much in each bed as I can.

You are inspiring new and seasoned gardeners! I will be following along again this year, not sure if I will be doing the 5×5 template, but will be checking in weekly to see what is new, get gardening tips and ask questions. How exciting to have an article in the magazine!
Maybe some year you could do a winter garden challenge…I tried one this year, lets just say, I have a lot to learn about that. It was a good experiment. Looking forward to spring and planting.

I can help out for the southern hemisphere. By all accounts it’s going to be a mild winter this year in Australia so a winter garden looks promising.
