Tedious Trim

February 6th, 2014

The upstairs bedroom redo is coming along quite nicely. The walls and ceiling were painted with three coats of ‘Classic White’ Benjamin Moore eggshell paint and they look fabulous. The trim is being painted in the same color but in a satin paint so it has a bit of a sheen. The goal was a blank canvas and it worked. I’m excited to get the baseboards painted and installed so furniture can start being added.  Those are new wood, simple square pieces that will be painted white as well.

Meanwhile, I’m still painting the trim. It needed a good sanding first, as it hadn’t received that vital step before being sealed. The result was raised woodgrain that defied being dusted or cleaned. I gave all the trim (along with the walls and ceiling) a good sanding before we got started. I also filled all the nail holes with putty.  Then a few coats of primer were painted on to seal in any stain.

After several coats of primer, a coat of white paint was added and is still in the process of being added.  Painting moulding is a tedious process and seems to take forever.  All the trim in the room takes me about an hour for each coat.  So far I’ve painted five coats and will most likely do one or two more.  After that I’ll take my scraper to any paint that accidentally made it’s way onto the windows.

It looks fantastic though, crisp and clean, light and bright – just what I was hoping for. A good cleaning of the windows also helped brighten the room, if you’ve been reading here long you know I how much I appreciate a clean window (each window takes about an hour since I have to take out the storm windows and clean them as well).  I can’t wait to get all the shelves and tables in here along with all my sewing supplies.  Then I’ll be searching for a queen sized bed for guests, hopefully I’ll be able to find something old and interesting from a local antique store.

Has anything tedious been taking up your time?

Looks great! Trim is just terrible to paint but keep thinking how great it will look and how easy it will be to keep it looking nice.

We sure are enjoying our room upstairs that we repainted. I’m so glad to be rid of that ugly eggplant-and-green color combination. Dark colors are just not my style at all.

Ugh, painting is the most tedious. I have a lot of it to do this summer–can’t do it in the winter because the rooms that need painting are too cold.

Yo’re unlikely to find a queen-sized antique bed; double was the biggest bed made until faurly recently. But maybe you’ll find something someone retrofitted to be bigger or something.

Or find a good reproduction in a consignment shop! That might be a queen.
Your white trim already looks so silky smooth!
I have been spring cleaning… I sure can’t do it in the spring, when the garden calls. I always intend to do it before Christmas, but I have come to realize that finishing knitted gifts and baking will always take priority.
You inspired me to clean 62 windows for winter and removing the screens till spring…
I am afraid there is too much trim, all perfectly good, but dark cream. So window cleaning is now part of my annual routine, at least once upstairs and more often downstairs.
Oh well, next house we live in, back to white! Some mistakes we just have to live with.
Your sewing room will be wonderful, good light is so key!

Your paint job looks beautiful Susy. It’s amazing how much you and Mr. Chiots accomplish!

Susy, black barn and white house. You certainly do like contrast. It’s interesting that you would choose white for the trim as well. There’s just too much white in an all white room for me. Although the elegant houses of 100 years ago were mostly white in color. The furniture defined the contrasting color in the room. I’m assuming the furniture and window treatments won’t be white …. or will they? You certainly don’t follow trends, do you. I find people with independent thoughts inspiring. Out of the box thinking can be very creative. Unfortunately, I’m not too creative but I’m working on it.

The most tedious thing in my life right now is purging the basement of all the stored away treasures. Today should be another day of ridding the area of electronic paraphernalia. Brian should get a kick out of my find yesterday. I found a so last century piece of computer hardware. When was the last time to actually used or even seen a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk drive. It used the big floppy disks that didn’t have the hard case. Yeah, I know. It should be in a museum, right? I have boxes of ten to twelve year old computer parts. It’s quite a nostalgic trip going though those boxes.

The onions are up about an inch now and standing strong. Misting three times a day with grow lights on for 12 hours are a daily routine. The Walla Walla onions with be started next week. So I guess the garden season has started in some ways even though the garden is covered with four inches of newly fallen snow.

Have a great Winter project day.

Ugh, painting trim is the worst. I started working on some trim around here but really need to work on more soon.

Looks great! I also hate painting trim! At least you were only working with one color. Keep up the good work!

Beautifully done! The white looks so crisp and clean. Thanks for the inspiration! I need to get started on some painting around here, all I need to do is choose a color, white is looking good.
