Friday Favorites: Lights
I love big Christmas lights, the C7 and C9 sizes are my favorites. For our Olympic party we strung up lights in an area of our kitchen. I love the low ambient light they cast so much I’m thinking about leaving them up. I’m really sensitive to bright lights, so lighting like this is perfect for me.
They produce the perfect amount of light, it’s not too bright and not too dark. It casts light into the kitchen, bathroom and dining room allowing us to not have to turn on lights when moving about the house in the evening hours.
Lest you think this is a little crazy, it really fits right in with the eclectic look of this place. In this room there is outdoor board and batton siding, deer antlers and an old glass ball light, which were all here when we arrived. The lights fit right in! I was thinking about getting cafe lights for our back porch, but I might get a string for this room. They’d be slightly less kitschy than the Christmas lights.
What’s your favorite kind of lighting in the evening hours?

Love the lights, leave them up it’s not at all crazy. I too love soft lighting and we have fairy lights in our house, my son has solar ones in his room, the solar panel runs out his window and sits in the gutter where it charges all day!

I love my Wood Wick candles. They make beautiful light, smell good, and the crackle like a fire! Great to read by.

For dining candle light is the best. For sitting around the glow from the wood stove is so cozy. I do love the friendliness of the Christmas tree lights and always like to see the white ones used in decorating.

I love soft Christmas lights in my bedroom as well. So nice to have the muted light, instead of brightness at night.

One of my kids has small holiday lights in his room that he turns on at night. Looks great – gives off a great glow that looks amazing with the color of his room. As soon as we finish (and start) my daughter’s room, she will have lights too.
By the way, love the antlers hanging up. My daughter decorates the reindeer head and deer head with ornaments according to which holiday it is. She wants to hang lights off them for Christmas.

My neighbor took rope lighting and put them above her cabinets as well as along the bottom by the baseboard. It’s perfect lighting too. BTW love the antlers!

Susy, kitschy? I definitely had to look that word up. Something of tawdry design, appearance, or content created to appeal to popular or undiscriminating taste. Yeah, we certainly would like less of that look in the house. :-) I’m of the opinion that if I like it then who cares what other people think. I’ve thought about leaving up the Christmas lights outside on my patio trellis to back drop the hanging baskets during the summer. It would give the summer patio lighting just enough ambience but not as harsh as the regular driveway light. I’m going to give it try and see how it works. Low lighting just helps me wind down for the day. Colorful lighting would just be an added benefit.
Have a great low ambient light day.

I always leave my mantle greens, pine cones and twinkle lights up through February, although all other holiday decorations are down. Especially here in the north, we need any and all the light we can get to carry us through the long, dark days of winter!

Like your lights idea, Suzy. I would love to string rope lights on the rafters of our cabin when we get that far along with it. I don’t mind bright lighting, but dark corners and high eaves are spooky at night.

Oil Lamps are a favorite here.

I really like Himalayan salt lamps. I have one in almost every room and keep them on 24 hours a day. They might be a good option for you too!

I love the look and am the same way with bright/overhead lighting (UGH). These lights soften everything and really look beautiful.
Do it!

Love Christmas lights too! We’ve got small white one’s draped around our bed posts. They make a perfect night-light. I’m also one of the ‘naughty’ people in the neighborhood that leaves their Christmas light out all year. And … naughty naughty … turn them on every night!!! I love the colours. I’m sure they’re are people who think it’s inappropriate – but it’s one of the few rebellious things I do – so who cares!
