Did Somebody Say Bacon?

I’m finally at the point where I’ve been able to eat the bacon we made way back in November. I’m super sensitive to smells and until now, the smell of the smoke wasn’t allowing me to eat the bacon. I’ve finally reached that point where I can, so we’ve finally be eating up the bacon we made.

So far we’ve tried our German Bacon and the house bacon, both have been great. I can’t wait to try to River Cottage bacon next.

Now that we’ve tried the bacon I can start to give away some bacon. We were reluctant to give any away until we had tried it ourselves.

Now that it’s bacon time, we have a lot of bacon to consume in the next year! No doubt next year will be better for me as far as smells go, now that I’ve gotten through it once, it won’t bother me the next time around.

Are they any food smells that you have a hard time with?

    Only fried fat and fishy smells.
    I love baking smells, all smells that start with cooked onion, spices, herbs.
    We rarely deep fry, but when we do, that is the one smell that bothers me, besides less fresh fish, which we stay away from. Not a problem most likely in Maine!

    The smell of liver is totally repellant. But then, so is the taste and texture of liver to me, so really, liver is a no go all around.

    Also mutton. Smells very, very sheepy. Not a good thing. Can’t eat that, either, unless it’s camouflaged with curry or something very strong.

      Didn’t know you could find mutton anymore. Thought that went out with WWII. You don’t eat that, you butcher 100 lb. lambs. Nothing better than roast lamb or lamburgers. Oh, would love some.

    I cannot abide the smell of bacon. Not sure why, as I grew up eating it, but just can’t stand that smell…

    I love to eat eggs but I can’t stand the smell of them. The dishes that have had eggs in them have to be washed twice by hand or I can smell them. If these dishes are put in the dishwasher, all the dishes come out smelling like eggs and make me gag.

    I don’t mind most smells. Maybe fish frying, though.

    I love baking smells. They say you can sell your house easier if you have bread or cookies in the oven when people come to look at it. Heh!

    I can’t stand the smell of deep fried food. If my husband fries up food in lots of oil, the smell seems to stick around for days. I have banned all frying (deep frying) in the house – he is welcomed to do it outside though.

    Boiled chicken is another smell I can’t stand. It is awful. I will never ever boil chicken in the house again – that is done outside too.

    So, while I was vegetarian I couldn’t understand why everyone was on a ‘BAAAACOON’ kick with all of the memes. And then…we made bacon. Really, as I unwrapped the package I could have eaten it raw. mmmmmm, BACON! Definitely one of the meats that is on my ‘good’ list at the moment.

    Susy, I can’t really think of a smell that absolutely repulses me when cooking. Maybe it would be chitins. I can’t really say it made me gag but it sure was a bad smell. I did not partake of the dish. I guess growing up around all the barnyard orders desensitized my nose. There are some pretty pungent orders around the animals on a homestead at times.

    Most folks would like the smell of bread or pie baking in the oven but my best ever smell that lingers in the house, well besides bacon, is onions. I just like the smell of freshly sautéed onions. Weird, huh. I’ve only found one thing that don’t go well with bacon and that’s ice cream. Yeah, I told you I was weird. I tried it twice. Once on a chocolate sundae and once in a peanut butter bacon shake. Both were a one time experience that won’t be repeated.

    Liver – I think that’s a pretty common one.

    Anise/licorice. I can’t stand that smell.

    Peanut butter – but I like eating it. Isn’t that odd? I don’t like the smell if I’m not eating it.

    Mushrooms being cooked – though I like them raw, and I like them once they’re finished cooking.

    Your bacon looks FANTASTIC.

    Most smells do not bother me, but I would like to know how did you smoke your bacon? Where did you get the “recipe”?

    I’m absolutely NOT a bacon person. It’s one of those foods that I just don’t see the point of. Of course, I’m also very picky about the ham I eat as well.

    As for smells, sadly I have a very sensitive nose and most smells really get to me. I do best with citrus smells, but anything floral or perfumey makes me very sick. Headaches, queasy stomach, etc.

    Also, the scent of the sauce in canned Spaghetti-O’s and Ravioli smells like vomit to me. Maybe from eating it too often as a child?

    Morcilla! Ughh it’s a Portuguese blood sausage that when growing up my grandmother would make. Repulsive. I will eat and enjoy the smell of a British blood sausage though. Ground beef cooking also. Ever since I was pregnant until this day 5 years later I can’t stand the smell.
