Patiently Waiting
As I was thinking about what to write about for the 5×5 Garden Challenge post this week, I realized I don’t really have much. I’m patiently waiting for it to thaw out. This forecast isn’t helping, snow, and lots of it.
I am seeding things indoors, but nothing for the 5×5 Garden. What I need to do it get out my seeds and plan out where I’m going to be planting things when it finally does thaw. Here’s my post from last year about planning your garden.
Is the big winter storm going to be affecting your garden? Or are you happily soaking up sun in the South?

Our garden is thriving with our mild temps this year. I hope the big thaw comes soon for you. Until then, enjoy your planning!

Ugh, I was hopeful a week and a half ago but after leaving for Florida when a big ice storm was hitting our area and then returning to see what new growth and buds got hit (and my poor bees!)..I’m increasingly depressed. :( Now I just wonder how long it will take for things to start coming back—if they start coming back after that. We have one day of cooler weather and then thankfully back up into the 70s again. I’m tired of yo-yo weather.

I am happily soaking up sun ,the ocean and the mountains way down South, Grenada in the Wind Islands………..The Caribbean:-) When up North gets snow, we get rain.

We are about 3 weeks behind average this year, implying we may go straight from winter to summer. I got to plant outside yesterday, it was in the 70’s! Today its back to the 40’s but it was great to get a taste of spring.

Susy, as you know I’m in the center of the U.S. In fact the geological center of the U.S. is 217 miles from where I live in Lebanon, Kansas.
We had some what of a rain/snow mixture with 40 MPH winds yesterday. It didn’t last long and the ground was at least warm enough to keep from causing ice glazed road conditions. Today the temp will be nearly 50 with more thawing. I have ordered a soil thermometer. I am planting by soil temperature this spring. The weather is so bi polar this year that I am thinking the soil temp might give a better indication when it’s time to plant.
As soon as I can dig in the raised beds, I plan on rejuvenating the soil but adding some peat, vermiculite, lime, and Epsom salts. I haven’t really done any thing other than compost for at least five years. It’s time to fluff them up a bit. As of a couple days ago they are still frozen. I’m hoping for a couple good rains to help warm up the soil.
Have a great Maine pre spring day. :-)

Susy, Clarification. I do not live in Lebanon Kansas. I live in Nebraska by the Missouri river which is 217 miles away from Lebanon Kansas.

Oh no! Hopefully the forecasters are wrong and total amounts aren’t what they predict. We will be planting rice this year if this rain keeps up. The city of Sea Tac, WA where the average rain estimates are taken for the region, measured 6 inches of rain this month so far. Where we live, near the Cascade Mountains, we received that in one day in March. I checked on our greenhouse yesterday, and the garlic is swimming in its raised bed. Wah! Can’t wait till things dry out to get some of my lettuce starts in the ground. Last year I had peas and beets growing for 3 weeks by this time.

We enjoyed 53 degrees on Monday, and were swimming in the puddles. Today it is 25. Thankfully we dodged the snow system and are looking forward to a gradual melting. I hope I can get my lettuce starts in the ground within a month. I need more room under the lights for tomatoes and peppers. I can see more and more of my hugelkulture bed every day. I think that will be the first thing that will be ready to plant.

That storm system is here! Had drizzles this morning and then snow started about 10am. It’s steadily increasing in intensity and volume. I really enjoyed the good weather yesterday as much as I could, knowing this was coming. Good thing I have blooming plants indoors right now – at least I can smell spring.

Hang in there, it won’t be much longer, I hope!
Getting a few nice days here and there now in NE Oklahoma. Cold and windy today. One of those days for getting caught up on inside stuff.
