Friday Favorite: Color in the Garden
The grass is just starting to turn green, but brown is still the dominant color in the garden. I’m always happy to see the Johnny Jump Ups blooming, they’re such a cheery sight even when things are still brown.
They’re edible as well, so when the salad greens are ready to harvest I’ll be harvesting these little beauties to add color to our meals.
What’s the first thing to bloom in your garden?

I saw our first opened iris this morning! I have several buds on various plants and each day I look for the surprises spring brings…. we have redbuds open here and I am told you can use them as garnish too– how pretty on top of a simple white cake!?

I love the Johnny’s too. I haven’t seen any yet. The only color I see out there is brown, but it’s a whole lot better than white! I am ready for the warm weather.

I forgot about the garlic and chives. I have green! They are blooming all down the fence line.

Susy, most years the crocus are the first to bloom at the Urban Ranch but they didn’t even bloom this year. Not a single flower. The Daffodils are in full display with wonderful cheery yellow flowers. The tulips not to be left behind have started to bloom. In the neighborhood the tulip trees have outdone themselves this year. Oh, how, I love this time of year.
I pulled out the 29 year old Honda mower to get it ready for another mowing year but alas it just wasn’t in the old gal. First the starter rope broke; then the blade needed to be replaced; then the blade clutch just disintegrated and dropped the blade on the driveway. That was it. There was no fixing that. So after three days of hard labor trying to keep Honda mower mowing, I had to take her to the shop and trade her in on a brand spanking new one. I should never have to buy another lawn mower. Well that is if this one last 29 years like the predecessor. All that to say that the mowing season has begun with the first mowing of the backyard. Everything here has left brown winter behind.
Have a great color in the garden day.

The scilla are always the first color other than green. Although not flowers, my red, pink, maroon and mauve sedum are the first colors I see. Silver of artemisia is a nice contrast to the sedum. Tulips, poppies, iris, and May Night salvia round out the spring until the summer comes to bloom.

A scrumptious daffodil.
It made me so happy.
