Growing SLOWLY

April 5th, 2014

Back in February of 2011 I started cactus from seed. They were tiny, so, so tiny.

Well, they’ve been growing in their tiny pots for the past 3 years and are still small, but they’re growing.

They’re starting to look like their adult plants, less like baby plants and more like mature ones. It will be interesting to see how long they live and how they grow every year. I suppose if I fertilized them more often they’d grow faster, but I rather like their slow growth rate. I usually give them a diluted fish emulsion once year.

Have you started any interesting plants from seed?

Friday Favorite: Relics

April 4th, 2014

Back in Ohio, it was very common to unearth relics while working in the garden. It’s no different here in Maine. Last year I remember picking up dozens of things that were buried during the previous years of ownership. Just this week, the chickens dug up this yellow cup in a small patch of woods by the garage.

The pigs also unearthed loads of goodies in their woodland area last summer.

Then there are the bulldozer tracks up the garage.

And every now and then I find a piece of trash that blows in from somewhere.

These things all provide an interesting history of the people who have lived here before us.  No doubt many more things will be unearthed as I expand the gardens.  I wonder what I will find next.

Have you found interesting things in your garden?

Broody Hen

April 3rd, 2014

I finally have a broody hen, which is funny. Most people try to figure out ways to break their hens of their broodiness, I’ve been wanting one of mine to go broody. This little lady started to feel broody a week or so ago, she spends more and more time in the nesting box each day.

Now that she’s sitting all day I’m going to move her to a small dog kennel with a nest and a few eggs I’ve been saving from my Wayndotte hens. Hopefully she’ll hatch out a few chicks. ‘Tis the season, it seems all the wildlife around here is started to get ready for the upcoming warm weather. I’ve seen lots of activity with the local ravens and hawks, they seem to be getting ready to make nests and raise new clutches of little ones.

Have you noticed any animals starting to get ready for the season of babies?

Patience

April 2nd, 2014

Today for our 5×5 Challenge Garden feature, I figured patience was a timely topic as I wait for my garden to thaw. Patience is a valuable thing to learn if you want to be a good gardener. It makes gardening much more enjoyable and increases your likelihood of success.

It seems like more often than not, as gardener, we’re waiting for something in the garden. In the spring we wait for the snow to melt and the ground to thaw so we can plant hardy things. We also have to wait until after last frost to plant for our tender plants. If we jump the gun too much we can end up losing them to a last frost or freeze.

We wait for seeds to germinate, we wait to plants to be big enough to transplant then we wait for flowers to form. We wait to for things to ripen so we can harvest them. The good thing about gardening is that you’re not just sitting around twiddling your thumbs while you’re doing all this waiting, there are plenty of things that can be done, mostly weeding.

Learning to be patience in spring is key, don’t plant things too early. You might get lucky some year, but you’ll be sorely disappointed in others.

Do you have trouble waiting for things in the garden?
