That Turkey
Mr Chiots is a hunter and it’s spring turkey season here in Maine. He’s been out a few times without any luck. Of course this past Sunday morning there was a BIG tom turkey right below the house trying to impress our guinea hens with his display.
Needless to say, they were less than impressed and went about their business of eating bugs and grass completely ignoring him. Lucky for him, it was Sunday morning, no hunting allowed. Otherwise he’d be in our fridge.
What wildlife have you spotted in your garden this week?

I have been hearing a turkey or two in my back yard the past couple of days. Last week a fisher cat was running through the backyard too. Other than that, it has just been chipmunks and deer hanging around.

So many birds moving through this week, the orioles are back and very talkative, and lots of warblers migrating so it’s fun to spot the less common travelers. The regulars are nesting so that’s fun to watch too.

We saw 2 coyote pups around 6 am yesterday, at the edge of our property (5 acres). My husband has lived here for 6 years and never seen a coyote here. We knew they were around, but they hadn’t come around our property.

I wouldn’t mind having turkeys around. I also wouldn’t mind eating some wild turkey!

We have been hearing a lot of turkeys in the woods around here. As far as the garden, squirrels have been running through. Green beans are up, we’ll have to get the fence in before the rabbits discover them for a snack.

Susy, Old Tom knows when to come out and strut his stuff. I used to have three Toms and their harem of at least 25 or 30 hens that hung around the garden but all of them seem to have moved on to better places. This year at the garden has been strangely void of animal life. The flocks of turkeys that were there the last two years are no where to be found. The only evidence of Nebraska Phil (the groundhog) is from his den holes indicating that he is still around. The wild life that existed there two years ago has moved deeper into the wooded area and don’t hang out at my garden much. It’s kind of a sweet sorrow for sure. The more I tame the land the more the wild life disappears. I kind of miss them.
Have a great turkey viewing day.

It has been a busy week wildlife wise here….thus far I have seen a snake…a gecko…two toads….and a chipmunk:) The chipmunk concerns me because I do not want it eating my bulbs…but it is so darn cute!

Those pesky chipmunks can be super destructive. Back in Ohio we had so many move in they started burrowing around the foundation of our house. Thankfully a feral cat moved in and helped us with our problem, sadly, not before it ate all my tulip and crocus bulbs.

Thankfully, not much… just birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. I could live without the chipmunks… the other 2 dont bother me.

Prairie hares are all around Calgary and I fear for my garden. One has taken to my lavender bush and I call him ”Dinner”. If he eats my garden, that’s what he’ll be.

Really? Not hunting on Sundays?
We’ve seen a couple of bunnies around the yard, as well as swallows and eagles. We discovered Thursday that the Momma Canadian Goose in the tree stump down the road had 3 babies. The whole family goes out for an evening stroll along the creek.

A small toad, a big black snake, and a nest of wheel bugs emerging from their eggs. The wheel bugs look like small spiders when they hatch–it was really cool.
