Belfast Garden Tour #2

June 28th, 2014

Yesterday was the second week of the local garden club garden tour series.  The featured garden was right on the ocean and it was lovely.  Lots of rock walls, walkways and terraces made this sloping lot useable.  The massive oak and ash trees made for a mostly shady lot.  I must admit, taking photos of the flowers and plants when there’s a strong wind coming off the ocean was a bit of a challenge. Here’s a tour of this lovely ocean garden. One nice this about this garden was that they had maps and keys listing all the different plants.

I especially loved the rock walkways in this garden, stone always looks right at home in a woodland setting like this one.

What’s your favorite part of this garden?

    So many!
I love the way the garden and the house are so well nestled into the landscape. It takes time and wise planning to achieve that!
I love the stand of lupines.
Susy, do you know the book “Mss Rumphius” by Barbara Cooney?
Miss Rumphious wanted to make the world more beautiful place so she scattered lupine seeds all over the Maine island landscape where she lived. You will love this book and so will your nieces and nephew.
    Thank you for the tour.
PS: what is that last tender green plant? A dwarf Hosta?

What a picturesque home. I can see why they are happy to share tours. The treehouse is fabulous. I also love the small boxed herb beds. What a wonderful place to spend some time. Thanks for sharing this peaceful oasis.

Susy, I really like the overall some what wild natural look of the garden. I’ve always liked that kind of a look but I just don’t know how to make a garden look like that or to actually maintain one. I’m with you on the stone pathways. They fit into the natural gardens without stealing the show. I’m sure they have garden tours here in Nebraska as well but I just don’t have the time to search them out.

The rains continue here. We got another 1/2 inch of rain yesterday with more high winds. This June has been filled with wind storms. It’s been really difficult to get any gardening done. We’re down to 109 days until frost which is still time to get some squash and pumpkins planted with plans for getting the fall garden bed ready for planting. The star of the garden this year still is the potatoes. They have not been affected by the winds, rain, hail, or even the neighbor’s lawn service weed spray. My Urban Ranch tomatoes got a pretty good whiff of the weed spray and are looking poorly. I’m seriously thinking about replacing a couple of them with the last of the tomatoes I grew from seed. What a difficult year of gardening this has been.

Have a great garden tour day.

I love the walkways too. Whatever that grass is in the picture is really exciting! ….and a tree house?! Perfect.

I’ll have to echo Marina’s comment about how well nestled into the landscape the house and garden are.
This is not a garden feature per se, but I also like the design and colors of the buildings, which seem so well suited to the environs.
The large oak tree is fantastic.
I also like the stone walk and the box of calibracoa.
The threadleaf Japanese maple hanging over the stone wall is very pretty, too.

Absolutely gorgeous. I could live there with no trouble at all.
