Finally Finished

August 19th, 2014

This weekend I finally found the time to finish up my travel patch quilt and it’s FANTASTIC!!!!! If you were reading last year you might remember me talking about it.

I didn’t want the back to be boring, so I chose colors of corduroy from one of my favorite patches. The fabric was cut in 5 inch strips and sewn together to form horizontal striped across the back.

I quilted it using the string that comes off of the feed bags in big winding lines. It seemed fitting to make them look like lines on a map or lines in the road.

Two weekends ago we visited a few Maine lighthouse and purchased a new patch to add to the quilt. It’s pretty exciting to see these patches finally being displayed, we’ve been collecting them for 16 years now. Each of these patches brings back memories of long drives, camping in beautiful places and seeing amazing places around the country. We can’t wait to hitch up our tiny teardrop and hit the road to collect a few more.

Any great recommendations of place to visit in this beautiful country?

Your handiwork is fabulous. Using the string is resourceful and really suits the style of the quilt.

    Well done :)

Susy, getting the itch to travel again, eh. I’m not a sight seeing traveler. I must have a destination and a reason to be there. Mostly family events or now with Bradley living with his Dad, possibly volunteering again will be scheduled. My old group that traveled to disaster areas has disbanded after five years due to aging and health issues of many of the participates so I’ll have to find another outlet. I would like to volunteer for a Mother Earth News Fair in Pennsylvania next year. I can’t quite do that this September but I will be volunteering in October at the Kansas Mother Earth News Fair. That’s only about 3 1/2 hours away from where I live. That’s my traveling and if I happen to see a few sights along the way it’s all the better.

Your quilting skills are fantastic. I have few quilts made by family members. I’m not sure who made them but I think it was grandmas. One was made by my wife. She always wanted to be a crafter but was never very good at it. If effort and determination were teachers, she would have been a master of crafting. Some things she was very good at but most were mediocre at best. Those mediocre crafting projects are now some of the best treasures I have from her. It’s hard to believe she’s been gone for 13 years.

Have a great travel planning day.

I was just looking at patches online the other day with your quilt in the back of my mind!
I love the finished quilt–the backing and stitching really pull it all together.

I just love it! Looks like an instant heirloom! I’m sure it will be treasured for a long time to come. The corduroy backing looks fantastic as well as the hand quilting. Makes me want to try quilting. What kind of sewing machine(s) do you use?

Your quilt is really amazing. On one of our cross-country car trips we stopped at the Corn Palace, a very interesting bit of American history…It is part of our family lore.
