Friday Favorite: Keyless Entry

September 5th, 2014

A couple weeks ago our front door lock broke.  When I say it broke I mean it fell apart into a bunch of little pieces, there was no fixing it. For a week or two the door was held closed by a lawn mower tire, classy I know! We debated on which type of lock to replace it with, a cheap keyed lock just like the one that was there or a slightly more expensive one with a keypad.  After a little research we decided keyless was the way to go and we settled on this one from Schlage. A long time ago when we had first moved into our house in Ohio, Mr Chiots locked himself out.  Since we were going to replace the basement windows he broke one of those to get in.

I’ve actually been locking our front door now that we have this lock, something I rarely did before. You can also set multiple codes, which is nice, especially in cases like this coming weekend when we have a house sitter coming. We programmed a code for her and can easily delete it when we get home. There is an emergency key that you can use if the battery goes dead, but it gives you enough warning to replace the battery when it’s getting low. We’ve only had this for a week but it’s already a Friday favorite!

Have you ever forgotten or lost your keys and had to break into your house?

When we were selling the old house, my then husband asked for my set of keys. I stared at him blankly because I had no idea what they looked like. Some things don’t change.

Susy, nope, I have not had to break into the house. A hidden key outside comes to the rescue when that happens. Now the truck is another story. I have two keys and have one key ring with the house key and the truck key. Then I have another key ring that hangs from my belt with another truck key. In ten years of truck ownership, I have only locked myself out of the truck once. It happened that I lost one of the keys and could not find it. During the fall months I managed to lock the other key in the truck. Locksmith to the rescue. Come spring with the beginning of garden season, I’m trying to put on my garden shoes and low and behold there was the lost key. I can’t explain how it ever got there but I was glad to have it back.

Locked doors are a dilemma for me. I have come to the conclusion that locked doors are only to keep honest people from being tempted. If a crook really want to get through a locked door, he will with no concern about the damage. Would it not be better if the door was unlocked? I know crazy thoughts. I still lock doors but I’m torn between lock or don’t lock.

Have a great key pad door lock day.

That’s the way I figure it. I’d prefer not to have the broken glass.

I love our keyless entry! I have locked myself out too many times to count. We have a hidden key too- both are for my benefit ;)

Oh Yes! With a house, guest house and three other outbuildings that need locking, the keyless entry was the perfect solution. Happy weekend!

We rely on our garage door openers instead of keys and even so we have locked ourselves out. My husband has had to break in through the bathroom window twice (which makes our “locked” house not very burglar proof). I now have a key in my purse and a hidden key to help us out. I never thought of a keyless entry for the house!

was it difficult to install? we don’t lock our doors, we live in such a remote location that I figure if someone wanted to break in they could do it easily without caring about the damage as one of the other commenters mentioned. We do have dogs, and we hope that they are a deterrent. THere have been break-ins in our neck of the woods, at dog less places, mostly into machine shops to steal tools. But we are looking at selling our place, so figure it would be a good plan to get a lock system

Not hard at all, super easy, took about 15 minutes.

It has been so many years since I have locked our doors I absolutely could not tell you where the keys are even! You know you live in the middle of nowhere when you don’t lock your doors I guess. In twenty years we have never had anything stolen!
