Gardens and Food

September 10th, 2014

Yesterday I finally visited Heronswood, something I’ve been wanting to do for years. It was a fabulous tour, I took over 500 photos, which I probably won’t have time to get to while we’re here in Seattle.
Seattle Vacation 1
After leaving Heronswood we drove a few miles south and went to Bloedel Reserve. I visited this garden a few years ago and really enjoyed it, I knew my mom would as well.
Seattle Vacation 2
We had lunch/dinner at Harbour Public House, of course my meal was seafood, a delicious curry.
Seattle Vacation 4
Our second ferry ride of the day took us right into downtown Seattle and then we found our way home through the maze of streets. Thankfully I’ve been out here enough to know my way around fairly well.
Seattle Vacation 3
Yesterday and this morning were drizzly, gray, and cold, something you always hear when you talk about the Pacific Northwest. The rest of the week is supposed to be sunny and warm, which is what I have always experienced when I’ve been out here. We still have a long list of gardens to visit, downtown, more delicious restaurants, a few shops and maybe we’ll even make the trek down to Mt. Rainier. Lots of gardens, good food, and the ocean, just my kind of vacation!

What are your favorite things to do/see/eat on vacation?

Susy, you are convincing me to search out gardens to tour. I doubt that I would travel as far as you have to check out a few gardens but I suspect there might be some closer to home here in my city. I’ve always wanted to seek out the local garden club but just never have. Nebraska has a Master gardener certification course that is supposed to be very good and I’ve always had intention to find information on the course, but haven’t yet. Although, I do have a cousin that lives just north of Seattle in a town called Sequim so perhaps some day I may just get to visit a few gardens in Seattle. It’s not a bucket list thing.

My favorite thing to do for a vacation is to get far away from civilization and camp on the shore of a secluded lake. Fishing and eating fish for supper would be the highlight of the day. My favorite place is in northern Nevada near the Utah border. The lake behind the river dam has nice lake trout that are three to five pounds each. There’s nothing like waking up on a frosty morning with coffee boiling on the camp stove while the scrambled eggs and bacon smell waft through the air. I could go on and on about my favorite vacations but I don’t want to write a book here.

Continue to have a great vacation day.

It was wonderful meeting you yesterday, Susy, and I hope the rest of your trip is brilliant. If you make it out to Rainier, and are in need of a little hospitality or duck watching time, look us up.

Thanks for planning Heronswood and for opening the tour up so we could join you. I’ll give them a try again next year, and see if they have any plant tags up by then. If so, you can bet I’ll send them pictures along to you to help with your plant cataloging!

Glad Theo worked out for you too.
    Take care and safe journeys,
    Whit

You are going to make me finish processing my photos from our trip to Seattle two years ago! Makes me miss the area a lot!

You have to visit the lodge on Mt. Rainier before you go…It is the one thing you will remember forever. It is about a 90 minute trip from the city.
