Always Amazing

September 13th, 2014

The first time I went to Mr Rainier National Park was over 16 years ago on our honeymoon. It was impressive and still is each time I have returned. Yesterday we make the trek down to the mountain. We even hiked a few miles to different overlooks up from Paradise Inn.
Mt Rainier 1
Overall we gained 1600 ft of elevation above the inn on our various hikes and the views were quite amazing. This is one thing that was new for me, I have never done any hiking up from the main visitor center.

Mt Rainier 4
Who can resist singing “The hills are alive with the sound of music” when they’re on an alpine meadow? Apparently everyone else but me, because I didn’t see anyone else doing it.
Mt Rainier 5
What national park visit is complete without a picnic lunch? We were lucky to have delicious salami, cheese, and arugula sandwiches with olives on the side – delicious post hike fuel.

Mountains are magical places, I’m not sure what it is, but they always make me happy. I love visiting them whenever I can. Perhaps they provide a reminder of how small and insignificant we are and that there are greater things at work.

What places are most awe inspiring for you to visit?

Susy, the most awe inspiring thing that I’ve ever done was in Mexico. Some years ago a friend of mine asked me to help him drive a van to Nicaragua that he wanted to deliver to a pastor friend there. Our first stop to stay over night was at a pastor’s house in Mexico. He wanted to show us the sights around his town which included a real authentic pyramid. Little did I ever know that I would ever get the chance to climb a real pyramid. There were 258 steps to get to the top. The view from the top allowed three more smaller pyramids to be seen. It was a total surprise to be able to do that and a real blessing for sure. I’ll never forget it and most likely never repeat it. It was definitely at the top of the list of most amazing things that I’ve done in my life.

Have a great always amazing mountains day.

I love your pictures, Susy, as always, but that last shot with Rainier and the cascading waterfall is spectacular. I love mountains and waterfalls, and when you combine the two, well, that’s my own version of heaven. My favorite spot on earth is Yellowstone National Park – we go there once a year. I also adore Glacier NP, Rocky Mountain NP, and Yosemite NP. We are National Park junkies! I found an old picture from our trip to the Cascades – we only had a weekend, and we did a whirlwind tour of Rainier and St. Helens. I was spinning yarn on a drop spindle waiting for my husband to finish cleaning the car windows, and he sneakily took my picture with Rainier in the background. I put it in my Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/debbie-b/15037958758/

Your posts of traveling in Seattle are inspiring! It is on our list of travel destinations, and your pictures are making me want to move it up on the list. The Johnson Shut-ins in Missouri have been my most inspiring place so far. I have climbed a mountain in Colorado, and of course the view was stunning, but the formations and views in the Shut-ins were such a surprise to be found in Missouri – I’ve really never experienced anything like it. Elephant Rock State Park, near the Shut-ins, is a close second.

I think one of the most awe inspiring places I’ve been to and through was driving from Billings, MT to the NE park entrance of Yellowstone. I had to drive through a cute little town called Red Lodge and then up along the Beartooth Highway through the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area. It was non-stop oohs and ahhhs and I pulled over so many times to get out and tromp along the snow on the edges of the road when I reached elevations that there was still snow (this was in June).

Another one of my favorite places was just east of where you are now, in the Enchantment Lake region. Another showstopper!
