Friday Favorite: Fall Color

October 17th, 2014

Every fall I am reminded of this quote:

“Mostly what’s on my mind right now are the falls colors. I go around gaping, as if I have never seen anything like it before. Perhaps I haven’t, I’m never quite sure. I could see this display every year and not grow tired of it, like seeing the flight of geese, or hearing the bird songs in spring. I remember, and that might reduce the amazement. But I don’t remember the edge–the vividness of the spectacle.”

I never tire of the beauty this time of year, the leaf change is one of the most remarkable things during the year. It happens at the perfect time, otherwise autumn would be a very depressing time. It won’t be long until everything is brown, but until them I’ll be soaking in all the beautiful colors as much as I can. There are lots of things to love about fall, cooler temperatures, root vegetables, winter squash, etc. What I love most is the exuberance of the leaf change, I know it’s coming every year and it still takes me by surprise, like the grand finale of a fireworks show!

What’s your favorite things about fall?

Around here it is just starting to turn. The mountains go from green to red then deep red-orange and finally a dark purple before the brown takes over. Every year I am surprised. We are lucky to live here!

Susy, the changing of the season is always an enjoyable thing for me. Each season has its own beauty. Fall is indeed a spectacular time of color display. The cooling of the temperatures and the turning of the leaves are certainly a wonderful part of the fall season. I’m a practical kind of guy so not only do I see the beauty but also the value of the falling leaves as mulch for the garden. Cleaning up the garden for the Winter months is similar to putting the children to bed in the evening for the night time slumber and rest. Soon the snow will be here and the planning for next February seed starting will begin the garden year all over again. I like to enjoy each and every season as it arrives, lives, and dwindles away.

Have a great fall color day.

The colors, the rich scent of the earth as the leaves decompose, the light, the crispness in the air, watching the wildlife prepare for winter, planting spring bulbs, making fall bouquets, listening to the geese flying south, picking apples, baking, etc. etc. :)
    Your fall photos are beautiful!

I’m a native Floridian. The way the trees in the great white north change colors have always seemed magical to me.

Florida ‘fall’ comes around January. Some trees do change colors, but they are not as vibrant as their northern counterparts. My favorite is a tree down the road that turns a rust color instead of the vibrant reds you are getting now. It is late and more subtle. You have to look for them.

For now, I’m just for cooler days. Cool by Florida standards, not Maine. It makes me want to be outside.

You are doing something on my bucket list – Maine in autumn. Fabulous. Doubt I’ll ever make it there. I’m such a hermit.

Fall brings sunlight at a less intense angle. Shorter days and cooler nights bring us Bakersfieldians out of summertime hibernation. Wonderful to be outside again.
