12 Days of Maine Christmas

The box is back again this year, our nieces and nephews saved it so we could refill it this year. Each day for 12 days they receive a Maine centric gift. There are clues on the container and they have to guess what’s inside.
Every day they video chat with us and try to guess what’s inside each bag/box. Then they get to enjoy what’s inside. It’s a great way to connect with family that lives far away during the holiday season. It also teaches them a little about the place we live.
Last year some of the included items were: Moxie, toothpicks, gummy lobsters and more. I won’t share what’s inside this year, I don’t want to spoil the fun.
Do you have any creative ways to celebrate holidays with family from far away?
My mom moved to California and my brother moved to Boston a few years ago and I like send them Maine care packages at the holidays. Local honey and whoopie pies are always favorites!

Susy, you are always so creative in finding ways to make holidays interesting. My holiday celebration for long distance relatives is cards. Each of the major holidays, a card is sent to all the grand kids, aunts, uncles, and some friends. During Christmas 80 some cards are sent. My cards are not just a “Happy Holiday” greeting and a signature but a personal message in them written my me and a news letter. The grand kids have always gotten five dollars in every holiday card and gift cards in the birthday and Christmas cards. I’m known as the Grandpa that sends money. I’ve been staying in touch that way for over a decade and most of the grand kids are starting to grow up with one already married. I asked the 22 year old if I should continue the tradition and she said “Don’t stop”. I guess even though the five dollars isn’t much to her now, it’s the remembrance of all the years when it did. Some holiday traditions carry on long after their importance becomes just a smiling memory of the past.
