Death and Taxes

February 24th, 2015

“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”
-Benjamin Franklin

Yesterday I spent the day filing out my tax notebook for my accountant. We’ve had the same accountant for many years, he’s always been FANTASTIC. He’s not cheap, but the peace of mind he provides and the savings he provides on our taxes more than makes up for his hefty fee. Of course our taxes are not simple, with two businesses and now a woodlot to add to the mix he has to work hard to get his fees.

I’m sure I could do our taxes myself, but I like having someone else check my figures and maximize my tax benefits. Kenny is fantastic at what he does, he has a masters degree in accounting after all. It’s ridiculous for me to think that I can do something he’s studied many years to do. He also keeps up with all the tax laws and makes sure all his clients know any new laws that affect their businesses throughout the year. He really is worth his weight in gold, at least in my mind. I like spending a few hours filling out the notebook on his website and then signing forms and paying the bill when he’s all finished up! I’ll spend my extra time starting seeds this time of year.

Do you do your own taxes or have someone do them for you?

We do them ourselves, with the help of TurboTax. I used to do them, but when my husband started his law firm, he took over doing them. This year is going to be a complicated one, but a lawyer is almost as good as an accountant when it comes to mind-numbing forms. :-)

I have hired an accountant 100% of the time I’ve been filing taxes. Our taxes are a little more complicated now and there have been several situations we have been thankful we’ve spent the money and hired an accountant. No matter how simple my taxes may be, it is unlikely I will ever give up my accountant.

We also have multiple businesses and a variety of complications that I could never deal with. Very grateful for my “tax lady” who makes sense of it all.

Susy, ha, my taxes creep ever toward the famous joke of “what did you earn? Send it in.” I’ve gotten to the point of only having house interest, real estate taxes, and charity deductions. I’m am very close to not having enough deductions to even file the long form. I usually have to pay in more at the end of tax season. I’m one of those rich guys that the government thinks should pay their fair share. NOT!! I will really stop now before I get out of control.

Have a great tax relief day. :-)
