Lovely Lemongrass
I’ve always loved the flavor of lemongrass, when I was a kid I always had lemongrass tea. Many years ago I read that you could start your own plant from a piece of grocery store lemongrass, which I did, but it never seemed to thrive. Last year I tried to start lemongrass from seed with no success. This year, I was determined to get the seed to sprout. After thinking about what the best conditions were, I decided a simple terra-cotta pot with a glass dome should give it the best chance for germination.
Turns out I was right. I set the pot in a sunny window upstairs so it would get nice and warm every morning. That seemed to provide just what the seeds needed and they germinated within a few days.
I’m pretty excited to watch these little seedlings grow up. I’ll be even more excited when I can harvest them and make tea and soup.
What fun things are you trying to grow?

Susy, I’m going to try to grow some giant pumpkins this year. I have the room for them so I’m giving it a try. The seeds I ordered and now have in my possession are seeds that come from a genetic line that produced the record breaking 1800 pound pumpkin. I don’t expect any thing that big and really don’t want one that big but one that’s a couple hundred pounds would be nice to display in front of my house during the fall holiday season, don’t you think?
Have a great lemongrass day.

I grew some lemongrass from a supermarket stalk last year. I just put it in a little water until it rooted, then planted it out in my greenhouse. It’s survived our mild winter (UK zone 9) and I have 8-10 stalks now.
Right now I have a piece of turmeric root on a warm windowsill & I’m hoping it will root. I’m hoping to have some ginger & turmeric to harvest next year. Then along with other stuff I’m growing I can make some homegrown curries.

I’m not starting anything at the moment but as soon as I get to the grocery store to find lemon grass, that’s what I’ll be trying! :) And thanks Jenn on the turmeric tip…I have a piece in the fridge that I’ll take out today.

I grew rhubarb from seed. I think it was a miracle cause everything I read said it wasn’t possible. But it’s still alive today!

We have some pea shoots started indoors. My son loves to walk by and grab one and munch on it. I just planted a new batch to replenish our supply. They really are sweet and delicious. I just purchased lemon grass for a chicken recipe; I’m going to go put one of the stalks in water and see what happens!

I am going to try this! I can’t find lemongrass in the stores around where I live.
