Welcome Visitors

March 10th, 2015

My guest room has been turned into my seed starting room. Last year I put my big grow light in the basement, which turned out to be way too cold for my seedlings. Our basement is unheated, uninsulated and not very tight. As a result it’s pretty cold down there. Even though the grow light puts off some heat, it wasn’t enough to warm up the space.

So I took over my guest room and turned it into a seed starting room. These guests are more than welcome to stay as long as they’d like!

Where do your seedlings live while they’re indoors? Have you found the perfect spot for them?

We had the same problem with our basement, so now we grow them upstairs, plus I feel like I take better care of them when I see them more easily! We move around a lot–this year it’s the guest room, but I like to have them closer to the back door if possible when they get big enough to start moving outside or to the cold frame during the day.

I have always used the basement, until last year, when my husband was out of the country for several months. I moved the seedlings into his office, which is one of the sunniest rooms in the house. I could not believe the difference. The seedlings grew better than ever before.

You might be a gardener if…. your guest room has grow lights in it. :)

Susy, my seedlings are under grow lights in the basement furnace room. The temperature there is between 65 and 70 degrees. It seems to be a good temperature for growing. Of course all my starts begin life on the heat mat which stimulates the seeds to life in about 3 to 5 days. After that they are under the grow lights without the heat mat. I seems to work wonderfully well.

Have a great seed starting day.
