Lotsa Lettuces
Yesterday I spent a little bit of time transplanting lettuce seedlings. They were a bit bigger than I’d like, but with all the rain and cold nights we’ve been having lately I couldn’t get them planted sooner.
Luckily it started raining as I was finishing up, so they’ll get watered in quite nicely.
These beauties were planted in alternating rows in the garden. I find that this helps me keep the varieties separated much more easily. I’m super excited about salad season and I think that I should be able to harvest a salad or two from my container lettuce this week. Guess it’s time to start making up a few batches of dressing.
What’s your favorite type of lettuce to grow?

Susy, wow, that’s some good looking lettuce. I planted mine directly in the garden a couple weeks ago. They are beginning to make their appearance now. My lettuce that I planted this year is black seeded Simpson lettuce. Lettuce and cabbage are tough plants that will endure some cold temperatures. I haven’t really tried to start lettuce inside under the grow lights. Maybe I’ll give it a try for some later season lettuce. I’ve already outgrown my small seed starting station. I’m thinking that I don’t utilize it to maximum benefit. I’m beginning to realize that it could be used continuously through out the garden season. Gardening is always about learning more, isn’t it?
Have a great day in the garden.

Lettuce is one thing that I wish I could grow in the summer. I am just not a big winter salad eater and well, that’s when it grows down here. Chris had tons of it planted this year but I didn’t eat very much of it.

We’re in Vermont, which I think has similar temps as you in Maine. This week a couple of nights are getting down to 37 and 40. We have for the first time alot of things (too many things) growing in our basement under a grow light and I’m wondering when we can start putting things outside. With your lettuce outside are you going to cover it in the evenings or will it be okay with low temps but no frost? Thx, -Holly

I moved it out initially into a low tunnel, but I plant most cold tolerant varieties of lettuce and they do fine. In fact, one morning they were all frozen and they simply bounce back.
