Parade of Lettuces

June 3rd, 2015

I was out looking at the potager yesterday and noticing how beautiful all the lettuces are getting. There’s something so pretty about Batavian and Butterhead lettuces, they almost look like roses. Edible gardens really can be just as beautiful as ornamental gardens, in fact I think they’re more beautiful in some cases. Here’s a parade of some of the lettuces growing in the back potager. I planted 16 different varieties this year and I love each and every one.

I really love butterheads and the varieties with red tinged leaves. They’re all just as tasty as they are pretty too!

What’s your favorite kind of lettuce to grow?

Susy, my lettuce that I grow is just ordinary black Simpson leaf lettuce. It has always grown good for me and tastes great when harvested. I’ve already had a sample from a volunteer plant and the lettuce that I planted is almost ready to eat with a second crop right behind the first planting. It’s just so much better and tasty than store bought. It practically melts in my mouth. It’s so delightful to once again be eating out of the garden. What do you do with all that lettuce. Chicken food maybe?

I flipped over my calendar to June and there is a great picture of Tara. I haven’t heard much about her lately. I sure all is well and she is doing just what she was designed to do. Protect her territory.

We (my daughter and I) are bringing my grandson back to live here in Nebraska again after living with his Dad for a year. I’m going to be off the grid probably Friday through Sunday. We will be traveling the 995 miles one way there and back in two and half days. It’s a quick trip mainly because my daughter can only get a couple days off from work. Anyway I’ll catch up with what’s going on in Maine when I return.

    Have a great lettuce day.

Gorgeous! I usually just get mixed packs of seeds, so I don’t really have a favorite…

I love the speckled trout lettuce. The only problem, after growing the variety like this, I can hardly choke down store lettuce anymore. I have turned into a lettuce snob. I’m owning it.

I’m totally a lettuce snob too now, there are worse things I suppose.

I wasn’t sure if you were talking about the fourth photo from the top or the fourth photo of individual lettuces. The fourth from the top, frilly and green, is ‘Louviers’ endive and the fourth lettuce is ‘Redina’ leaf lettuce.
