Quote of the Day: P.S. du Pont

June 13th, 2015

“…I have set myself and guests to work planting flower seeds whenever I have opportunity.”

– P.S. du Pont, 1907 (The Heritage of Longwood Gardens: Pierre S. Du Pont and His Legacy
)

Copperbeechtrunk
This week I am in the Philadelphia area with my mom visiting gardens. We went to Longwood Gardens yesterday, today we go to Chanticleer, tomorrow Winterthur. Every time I visit Longwood I’m particularly impressed with their copper beech trees.

I did bring my camera and have been taking photos, but I haven’t been downloading them in the evenings. So you’ll have to be happy with a few cell phone photos while I’m here. As always, Longwood did not disappoint. I was particularly happy to see their vegetable gardens lush with growth, I’ve always visited in the spring when they’ve been pretty bare.

Do you have any great gardens you love to visit over and over again?

    Longwood is great. Winterthur was too, but I have to go back because my time there was cut way too short by unenthusiastic small children. Plus, it was winter.

    Someday I’m going to do the same garden tour you’re doing. In the summer. Without my kids.

    P.S. We actually have a copper beech in our front yard almost as big as the one in your photo. It’s about 125 years old, and my husband has remarked more than once that he hopes he doesn’t live to see it come crashing down in a storm. And not just because we don’t want to have to clean it up.

    I love Longwood. I grew up about half an hour from there, and always loved their Christmas lights. We even had our engagement photos done there.
    And now we’ve moved to Maine – not far from you either, I don’t think. Been here about a month and am falling in love.
    Enjoy your trip!

    My fav would be the Botanical Garden in Huntsville Alabama. Might have something to do with how close I live to it. But honestly, it is an amazing place with some of everything. I love how every year they find something new to do that includes reaching out to sponsorship in the community. This year they did a Lego sculpture theme. Huge lego displays have been fashioned all over the gardens. One year it was tree houses, another Alice in Wonderland themed displays. Many very dedicated people work very hard to keep the gardens going and membership affordable to the public. Truly a jewel in an already fantastic city
