Eating, Reading, and Relaxing

June 17th, 2015

It’s been a nice few days spent in the Brandywine Valley area visiting gardens, eating delicious food, and learning a lot of history. On Tuesday, we visited Hagley Museum, yesterday we went to Terrain in the morning, had brunch there and then were off to Winterthur.

The food was delicious, we only ate out twice since we rented a little house. Most of the time we cooked in our house, big salads topped with bacon, avocados, and tomatoes for breakfast. We packed out lunches while out and about, and made quick dinners at home. You can save a lot of money cooking your own meals while traveling, renting a house instead of a hotel is comfortable and makes this possible.

Of course there was time to read while on vacation, I finished two books. The first was The Rhyme of the Magpie: A Birds of a Feather Mystery, a cozy mystery. A quick, and enjoyable read, just the kind of book that you want when traveling through airports. The second was The Perfect Son, which I thoroughly enjoyed!
Reading
In the summer I don’t read too much, I spend most of my extra time in the garden. It’s so nice to have time to be inspired by visiting beautiful gardens and have time to relax and read. It’s especially nice when it comes in the middle of a very busy season.

What are you favorite vacation activities?

Susy, I’m not one to go on vacations much. I like home, garden, and helping friends. I guess if I was to go on a real vacation and not a working short term mission trip, it would be a fishing trip. There’s nothing better than to wake up on a semi foggy morning and hear the loon call echo across the misty lake. It just soothes my soul to be on a lake with woods and wild life surrounding it. Hmmmm, maybe I should re think vacationing.

Have a great garden vacationing day.

Like you, I love to read on vacation. There is such freedom in reading without that nagging voice in my head saying “You know, you could be cleaning the closet (weeding the border, sweeping the basement, sorting the junk drawer, whatever…….)” When on vacation away from home, I can’t do any of those things so I can “binge read” without guilt!

Also (please don’t judge) if there has been some sort of disaster nearby, for some strange reason we enjoy digging into the local history and visiting museums about it. The Peshtigo Fire, The Johnstown Flood, forest fires and shipwrecks (we live in Michigan)…..we find it fascinating to see how nature, humans and communities recover from such things. It’s a great reminder of how quickly life can change and how people can overcome adversity when they work together.

I’m about to go on vacation in a few weeks to the beach and plan to do a lot of reading. There will be grandparents there to entertain the little one so I will have a bit of downtime. I just like sitting and talking, too. I’m sure we’ll check out all of the touristy places we can get to as well!
