Planting, Planting, Planting
This weekend I spent a lot of time planting perennials and vegetables, and there are many more to plant. I had plans of taking photos of my work, both for the blog and for my garden journal. However, I planted until dark and was chased in by the mosquitoes.
Most of the perennials were planted in a nursery area, they will be transplanted in a year or two when their final resting place is finished and when they have grown in size. Some of them will remain in the nursery area for a few years until they are large enough to divide. By then, I will have new garden areas that will be needing new plants. I love having full sized plants to fill them with so they look more established right away. I also like starting with one plant to see how they like the soil and microclimate in my garden.
Do you have a nursery area in your garden?

We added what I called a “holding bed” this spring. Some hostas and daylillies were being split and shared with a friend who is just starting to garden, and it was going to be a few months before we could get them to her. The holding bed had previously been used as a vegetable garden, so the soil was largely free of rocks and had been ammended with compost. It turned out to be a great temporary spot; the plants had a chance to recover from being split, and were in great shape when we were finally able to take them to their new home. There are several more plants to be divided this fall, and the holding bed will be a good spot to winter them over.

Funny you should ask! I just this weekend picked out a nursery spot. I’m going to start prepping it this fall to start using it in the spring. Over the winter I’m going to work on a garden design. It’s going to take a lot more plants than I can afford to buy outright.

Hah, yes, and even had a ton of plants until we killed them by neglect this summer. Oops.

I’m always afraid I’ll kill the plants if I move them like that.
