What a Beauty

September 1st, 2015

I don’t eat much chard, but I grow it every year. Mostly because I love the colors of the stems and the structure of the leaves. I like that it looks good all summer long and it provides some much needed longevity in the potager. This year I’m really loving ‘Peppermint Stick’ Chard from Renee’s Garden.

Isn’t it lovely? I smile every time I see it. I’ll definitely continue growing this beauty.

What’s your favorite beautiful vegetable?

Susy, even though I didn’t plant any chard this year, I do love the color of chard. It is the hardest plant I’ve found in the garden. When I have it in the garden it’s the last plant to give in to frosty nights. Many years I just have to pull it out to get the garden totally cleaned up. The dark green leaves and the bright colors of the stem make for delightful contrast of different colors. I’m not sure why I didn’t plant some this year and dearly missed it. It’s also great in salads even when over grown. It does have a similar look of rhubarb which I do not like but over all chard should be in every garden.

It was a delightful garden day yesterday and some work was accomplished. I picked up a very nice pallet at the “Body Basics” store yesterday. It will be a good wood resource for garden projects. I really like to re-purpose pallets into useful things.
Have a great colorful chard day in the garden.

I would absolutely grow chard as an ornamental. We don’t eat much of it in the summer, but I dehydrate it and crumble it up, and it’s a great addition to pasta, soup, etc. all winter.
