Making Way

October 8th, 2015

I’m making way in the garden for more things next year. That means thousands of strawberry plants are coming out. There are still plenty of strawberries out there, just not the ridiculous amounts that we had this summer. I left at least half of the plants and I’m debating cutting that in half again. Strawberries do best when the exhausted plants are pulled every couple years and the young plants are allowed to get established. I also like to move them to a new spot for crop rotation purposes. The nice this about berries is that they migrate on their own.

I tried to find people locally who were interested in plants, but no one seemed to want them. Oh well, I guess they’ll compost down into something lovely to feed the garden. Yesterday I was able to finish pulling the rest of the plants and get a layer of compost spread over the row. Next spring it will be ready for whatever I decide to plant, maybe something edible, maybe just a cover crop.

What chores are you finally getting done in the garden?

Susy, garden cleanup has begun here. Half of the tomato plants have been removed and the other half is soon to be removed as well. Today, my spring flower bed will be replanted. I’m going to try to actually make it look like a flower bed instead of farm row crop field. I’ve learned in the last couple years that flower beds should be planted in groups and not rows. It was difficult for me to grasp that concept but I’ll be making a try today. Well, and the leaf fall has begun so yard cleanup with be on the schedule as well. I love this time of the year because mulch and potential compost material abounds.

Have a great garden cleanup day.

We also pulled hundreds of plants out this year to make room for more productive plants. Things have been extremely dry here for the past month or so. I’m falling behind on my fall chores because the ground is dry clay, which is basically cement.

Oh, if only we weren’t at opposite ends of the country, I could use your strawberry plants. Since getting the sheep, we make lots of mulch, aka bedding, and our garden is going to be 100′ x 30′ next year. I’ve been slowly cleaning out the garden in prep for garlic seeding, but the greenhouse is still spitting out fresh tomatoes and peppers.

I *finally* ordered my garlic. Most of my favorites were long since sold out (sigh).

I have also been needing to do *a lot* of mulching, but I threw out my back a couple of weeks ago and haven’t wanted to flare it back up.

    There is never enough time!
