Friday Favorite: The Low Sun

October 9th, 2015

This time of year the sun is lower in the sky and it comes in the windows at different angles. Actually, it comes in the windows, bathing the room in a wonderfully warm, golden glow.
Morning sun
In the morning it shines on my favorite chair in the living room, this is where I sit and read sometimes before starting my day. If I must get to work early, I sit here with my laptop. In the afternoon, the sun shines in through my office window. While I love this light, I sometimes have to close the blinds for a half hour because of the glare off of my desk. Thankfully that is short-lived and soon enough the blinds are back up and I’m working in my light, bright office.

The cats seem to like the sun spots as well this time of year. They are like magnets, often you’ll find one or two cats in each sun spot. They move around throughout the day, following sun, soaking up as much warmth as they can.

I truly appreciate living in an area with seasonal changes, both in weather and in the sun. Growing up on the equator the days were the same, always. The sun came up at the same time every day and went to bed at the same time. The angle was the same and you didn’t get the beauty of long shadows during part of the year.

Do you live in an area where the sun changes throughout the seasons?

Susy, I don’t live quite as far north as you do but it’s enough to where the winter sun in lower in the sky and shines through the bare trees to light up my living room. During the summer months the sun is higher in the sky and the leaves are on the trees to shade the living room windows. My windows are open as much as I can have them open during the Spring and Fall weather. We should be past that time here but the temperatures are still in the high 70s and tomorrow upper 80s when the highs should be around 65 degrees. It totally confused the trees into not turning the usual fall colors and just dropping the green leaves off the trees. What’s up with that? I’m just now seeing the golden hue of fall leaf color so maybe it’s just a late fall. Night temperatures are down in the 40s just where they should be but five days from now is supposed to be our first hard frost. I don’t think that’s going to happen this year.

Have a great Maine fall day.

I live with two sunbathers as well: the barn cat and the house dog. Due to some early conflicts between the two of them, they’re cautious around each other now. But on Friday afternoon, the dog was laying on the driveway in a beautiful warm spot, the cat walked up to him and flopped down against his rump. Perhaps he just had the best spot, but I’m choosing to believe they actually like each other a little bit.

The sun has been streaming in our windows, too, and our old dog rotates her sleeping spots to follow the sun. The golden October Maine sunlight is kind of intoxicating.

On another note (but following a sky theme), if you happen to be up before sunrise tomorrow (4-5 am or so) and have a view to the east, check out the planets, Venus and Jupiter, not far above the horizon. I have never seen them as bright as last night. To top it off, a tiny crescent moon rises at about the same time. Maine skies continually amaze me.

When we moved to Vashon Island ( 20 min by ferry to Seattle) from Minnesota people were so concerned we woukd miss the sunlight- what a myth- – the sun comes out almost every dsy- you just have to catch it! It is sort of fun to play hide and seek and get the vitamin D when we can!

I'm making way in the garden for more things next year. That means thousands of strawberry plants are coming out....
