Amazing, for January

Well, I made what is probably my last harvest from the 2015 season garden, even if it was in 2016. On Monday, I went out and harvesting cilantro, kale, and spinach that I planted way back in the fall. For the past few weeks they have been covered by a blanket of snow. After rain all day Sunday, they were once again available for harvest.

I’m continually amazed by the plants that can survive very cold weather and being covered by a blanket of snow. Not only were the leaves not damaged by the cold, they will be sweeter because of it. Here’s to hardy vegetables that can withstand cold temps and snow and still be available for our plates!

    I also have spinach to pick. Unfortunately, one of my turkeys got the remaining kale.

      My turkeys found one patch of kale, not both!

    I pulled the last of the beets and carrots about 3 weeks ago (I’m in mid-Michigan). Last year I mulched the carrots heavily and dug them in January/February. While fun to have freshly harvested carrots “in the bleak mid-winter”, I prepare taxes and work 60-80 hours a week from the end of January through mid-April and it’s rough to make it out to the garden. So this year I’m settling for stored carrots. However, I did mulch the leeks and covered them with plastic so we can enjoy them when the stored and frozen leeks run out. I also still have some broccoli, cauliflower and cabbages in a low tunnel – more of an experiment to see what happens than hope of a harvest!
