My Favorite Houseplant

January 19th, 2016

I’ve pretty sure I’ve mentioned this here before, but my favorite houseplant is this pothos that lives in our bedroom. This plant was on the stage at our wedding almost 18 years ago and has been moving from apartment to apartment and home to home with us every since.
POthos
It really should be repotted, it’s in the same pot with the same soil – quite amazing. I give it a little bit of liquid kelp every now and again, but for the most part it’s pretty much an indestructible houseplant. This plants has spawned many an offspring, which are living in the homes of my friends and in other rooms of our home. It’s a fantastic and easy care plant if you are new to houseplants and want something along those lines.

What’s your favorite houseplant?

Very nice! I trimmed my pothos up a few weeks ago but I could let it get this long if it wasn’t in my office. Don’t want coworkers tripping. ;)

Wow, that pothos looks great! I somehow killed the one we had, whoops!

We also have a houseplant we call our “love plant”. My husband got it for me before we got married and it is going gangbusters too! Hopefully ours will survive as long as yours.

My favorite is my Christmas Cactus given to me 38 years ago this month. It blooms faithfully twice a year and survives my lack of care.

I’ve enjoyed your blog for years, lurking quietly.

Your mild mannered pothos made me laugh. It was probably 25 years ago that we had just one hanging pothos here in Florida. It escaped the confines of the container and over the years it has climbed trees in the front and back yards and now has huge one-foot size leaves. It’s also a ground cover in some areas of the yard, albeit with much smaller leaves.

Pathos can be crazy, this plant gets frequent hair cuts because it would quickly take over the house. When we lived in an apartment once we noticed it had grown into the carpet and into the drywall!

Another interesting thing about pothos is that they absolutely thrive in “cube farm” office environments. While there are often no windows for sun-loving plants or the windows are heavily tinted, large office buildings are usually awash in swaths of tube-style fluorescent lighting for 10+ hours per day, which pothos seem to really like.

It’s fun to have a pothos at one end of a cube row and then begin clipping the tendrils to the top of the cubes with bent paperclips all the way down the row as they grow. I like to keep one on my upper shelf just for a bit of greenery. When it gets too long, I clip it back, tuck the clippings into a vase of water to root, then when they are ready to plant, I pot them up and give the pot to a co-worker.

I have descendants of the same pothos I bought at a plant sale on the quadrangle in College…some 15 years ago. It’s a great plant to have around.

And they’re so great at cleaning the air!

I love my pothos, it is by my desk in the office :) I have a peace lily that was potted from the original gift to my parents. It is now 40+ years old!
