Friday Favorite: Snow
After being in the mid-fifties on Thursday, we woke up to snow covering the ground and a forecast of 3-6″ to fall during the day.
While I do love spring and appreciate it, I enjoy winter as well. Snow is vital to our gardens, it provide nitrogen and moisture for spring plantings. It protects our perennials with an insulating blanket. We will still get more snow in the weeks to come, winter isn’t even close to being over. I’m certainly going to relish these last few weeks of winter and hopefully will be able to get in a lot of snowshowing!
Do you get snow in your garden? When do you typically get your last snow?

Susy, snow can come as early as October and as late as May. The typical last snow usually comes some time in March and only once have I seen it come in May in my life time. My mother told stories of a snow that came on her May 25th birthday when she was a kid but I’ve never seen it that late. March and April snows are usually very wet and sloppy and melt within a day or so. Most city dwellers hate those last snows but they are the best ever for gardening. The ground has thawed enough to soak up the melting nitrogen rich snow like a sponge. I welcome as many of those snows as will come.
I really must begin seed starting with onions and cabbages. Having the garden secure this year will make a big difference in the harvest. I have high hopes for a wonderful year of gardening.
Have a great Winter snow day.

No snow here… or at least, very very rarely. It’s definitely not a part of the garden plan. I miss the snow from my days living up north, but I don’t miss having 6 months out of the year when I couldn’t even see my garden, much less work in it.
