A Good Start

April 19th, 2016

This past weekend it was beautiful here in the Maine. The temperatures were in the 60’s & 70’s and the sun was shining. I spent the weekend getting loads of things done in the garden. I planted onion, lettuce, and broccoli raab seedlings. I also seeded tomatos and planted dahlia tubers in pots, along with loads of other chores I’m completely forgetting.

It’s good to once again be feeling the sun on my back and my hands in the soil. I’m hoping to accomplish a lot in the gardens this year. They are slowly expanding and hopefully the final sizes will be achieved this summer and layouts can be finalized.

What did you do in the garden this weekend?

I pulled some weeds on Saturday but for the most part I either nursed a sick toddler or nursed myself after I caught the virus he had!

Now I need to pick up the pieces from the storms that came through the other night!

We had the same lovely weather in the midwest! I hauled a lot of mulch for garden paths and planted my onions and leeks. So nice to get things in the ground, isn’t it? It will be lovely to see your gardens’ progress this year!

Hauled mulch and watered. So much to do, inside and out! I have 72 tomato plants, and another 72 pepper, eggplant, and tomatillos that need to go in the ground soon, so I will be trying those baffled water walls around them.

Susy, yes, this is the busy time of the year. There never seems to be enough time to get everything done. We finally got a slow gentle rain yesterday that amounted to .30 of an inch. It’s been six weeks since the last rain and that was not much. The average rainfall for April is 4.33 inches. We were way below average for March as well so this this is not starting out on a good note. All the more incentive for me to get the irrigation system up and working at Terra Nova Gardens. Weekends are for family responsibilities. Gardening for me is during the week either sunrise morning or evening until dark. Now that grass mowing and weed control is upon me less gardening time will be the result.

Have a great day in the Maine garden.
