Friday Favorite: Seeding Vegetables

May 13th, 2016

It’s quite an amazing thing to sprinkle seeds on the soil, cover them up, water, and watch then sprout and grow into edible things. I seeded radishes last week that are already up. It’s the season for direct seeding all sorts of things: peas, beets, onions, lettuce, endive, etc.

I haven’t plants my main crop peas yet, but ‘Golden Sweet’ which are a sugar snap variety have been seeded. These are one of my favorite types of edible pod peas.

Beets are another one of my favorite vegetables. I love them boiled, steamed, pickled, roasted, fried, pretty much any way you can cook them. They will be seeded a couple more times throughout the summer so I have an endless supply for the table.

What are you seeding in your edible garden this weekend?

Susie, I may be to plant the next round of sweet corn. It’s been almost two weeks since I planted the first bed. I have three beds that I will be planting two to three weeks apart. I’m holding off on the second planting of tomatoes and green peppers until they get just a bit bigger and stronger. It will give me a chance to give the beds one last stir to foil the weeds before planting them in the ground. The first round of plants, as I’ve mentioned, were destroyed by hail. It was quite the storm with mounds of hail stones that were snow plowed off the parking lots that competed with the Winter snow drifts. Very high winds and rain came with it. Fortunately the stones were not big enough to damage cars and it only lasted 15 minutes. It could have been much worse and the gardens survived very well considering.

Have a great planting in the garden day.

Snow peas and bush beans went in this week, along with three varieties of winter squash. Our overnights are still on the cool side, so tomatoes will wait a few more weeks before planting. A second planting of lettuce and radishes happened this week also; oh, and onions! A 12′ row spaced to thin out once, with some extra planted more tightly in a container to use as green onions. A rainy forecast means I can skip watering everything this morning and enjoy an extra cup of coffee instead…

After a dismal April spent battling the flu, I am finding it hard to get motivated to garden. I haven’t any supplies to foil the chickens from the garden yet, so everything that self sowed is gone. I am needing to put up my fence this week, we found a sturdy PVC construction fencing works great for keeping our lil devil hens out of the garden. This year, we’ve increased the garden 4x, so I am hoping to finally not run out of space by June, and we’ll be able to plant a Fall/Winter garden.
