Creeping Thyme

May 26th, 2016

I have a few large rocks that create a patio of sorts by the front door. The area between the rocks was pretty much grown up in weeds, since the rocks aren’t level, it was extremely difficult to manage the growth of the weeds growing there. Last year I dug out a portion and planted creeping thyme, wooly thyme, and scotch moss. It thrived and expanded to take over a fairly decent portion of one of the cracks.

Now that I know it will thrive in that location, I will propagate a few more and fill in the rest of the cracks between the rocks. I like the creeping thyme a lot because it’s so short, growth densely enough to smother most weeds, and it blooms beautifully attracting tiny pollinators. I’m looking forward to have the weeds gone and something beautiful and useful in its place.

What plant are you particularly loving this week?

Susy, I have a rock path leading to my little pond and the creeping thyme there is one of my favorites. There are sedums and several other ground covers that are doing great and look so nice (if I could control the quack grass that encroaches). Yesterday when I went to plant some sunflowers there was already a neat little row volunteering from last year–so right now sunflowers are topping my list of favorites lol. I bought some shrubs this spring and the honeysuckle is about to bloom…hard to pick just one favorite this time of year :)

I have quite a bit of creeping thyme on a bouldered front edge of our yard. I had read that every 5 years or so it might die back. How are you going to propagate the creeping thyme? Some of mine has died back.

A few years ago, we ripped out a huge expanse of water guzzling, time consuming turf grass lawn and replaced it with creeping thyme…which is blooming right now. No more mowing, fertilizing, watering, etc. I epecially love when it is covered with bees! :)
Yours looks beautiful in between the pavers!
Another plant that I am loving right now is my newly planted lemon lime Current! It is beautiful with it’s lime greenish foliage.

I am loving my peonies and iris right now. They are all in bloom and they make my perennial gardens look so pretty and the weeds are much less obvious with their display catching your eye.
