Herbal Cats
I grow all kinds of herbs in the garden, including catnip. Of course the cats like to roll in the catnit and catmint, but they also love all the other herbs. Dexter is especially fond of the oregano and frequently smells of it. Samson is particularly fond of the thyme. I’m sure it’s partly their natural inclination for pest control. Many of these herbs keep pets away, let’s hope it helps them not be as palatable to ticks and fleas.
When I head out to the potager I frequently find a cat lounging in one of the herbs. It’s a good thing I have so much of each variety so I can harvest cat hair free sections for the kitchen.
Do you find that your pets like particular plants?

Your cats are so sweet, Susie. I forgot you had one named Samson. Makes me miss my Sam cat. :(

My cat Padma LOVES sage. He rubs his face in it all the time and I frequently catch him nibbling on it too.

Cuteness overload! It is interesting how they choose the favorite herb. I heard “plant fennel near the kennel” to deter fleas from dogs…I haven’t tried it though, our dog is indoor.

We do not allow our cats outdoors…safer for them and safer for the wildlife they would kill. We grow and give them wheatgrass and catnip in pots though that they love. Keeps them from nibbling on the house plants! :)

Since we have poultry and keep the foxes away, letting the cats outdoors is necessary for rodent control. We have noticed a dramatic decrease in deer tick populations since we have increased the number of cats outside hunting. Luckily, they aren’t interested in birds, just mice, voles, moles, and squirrels.
