Early June in the Garden

June 9th, 2016

It seems like overnight the garden goes from hibernation to exuberance. I’m continually amazed by the rate of growth in the potager and in the woods. Every day I notice new color in the garden and flowers start to bloom. The lilacs, irises, and wildflowers are starting to fade, making way for the peonies, foxgloves, and hydrangeas.

Pink and purple are the dominate colors in my garden, I also have a few white and green flowers in the mix. This is my preferred color range, I’m not a huge fan of yellow, orange, or red flowers, they seem a bit to bracing for me.

What’s blooming in your garden?

What is the name of the top purple flower in the photos? I love it!

False indigo. It’s a fantastic plant for the garden, very tough and easy to grow. It’s also a legume, so it will harvest nitrogen and make it available for surrounding plants.

Gorgeous photos! Especially the false indigo- I’ve heard of it but never seen a picture before. In South Mississippi we have tons of hydrangeas, daylillies, zinnias, cosmos, and black-eyed susans blooming now. It’s a riot of color!

Your garden looks a lot like mine a month ago, all pinks and purples and white! But my summer garden does shift to big reds and yellows. I love them in the summer heat.

Susy, yea, nature’s summer beauty is here. There are many blooms on the tomatoes and under them is either Forget me Nots or Foxglove I can’t remember which. They haven’t bloomed yet but the plants look magnificent. It’s the first time I’ve tried to mix veggies and flowers. I’m not sure these are good flowers to grow with tomatoes but I’ll find out. I planted a half a try (36) of Sunflowers and two came up so I’ll have to re start some more seeds. It’s the chance one takes with year old seed. I have a couple of moon flowers that need planting some where but when I started them, I didn’t know they were climbers. So, yeah, maybe some blooms later but pretty much just tomato blooms for now.

Have a great Early Summer day in the Garden.
