Friday Favorite: Brussels Sprouts

December 9th, 2016

I’ve been trying to grow brussels sprouts for year, they always seem to get eaten by something. This year, I planted them in the front corner of the main edible garden by Tara (our Anatolian Shepherd garden and livestock protector). That seems to have done the trick and my sprouts finally reached maturity.

Brussels sprouts are a favorite vegetable in the winter months and we are happy to have a very large harvest of them to enjoy for the next month or two.

This year I grew two different varieties of sprouts, ‘Diablo’ from Johnny’s Seeds and ‘Long Island Improved’ from Baker Creek. Both varieties did well, the ‘Diablo’ produced taller stalks with larger sprouts, but the sprouts weren’t as tight at the others. I will continue to grow a few varieties, next year I’d like to add a purple for a little variety. Stay tuned, next week I’ll share a favorite recipe for sprouts.

Do you like Brussels Sprouts?

Susy, wow, that is a lot of Brussels sprouts. What will you do with all those sprouts? I like them but don’t eat them as the grandson and daughter won’t touch them. They don’t eat any leafy green vegetables.

I’m glad to hear that Tara is doing well and still protecting the property. I don’t hear much about her any more in your blog posts. I guess when your doing your job well, there’s not much to tell, huh.

We’ve been getting bitter cold weather here. The temps are nearing single digits with highs in the 20s this week and weather people give us promises of colder weather next week. All outside activity is done for the year.

Have a great Brussels sprouts day.

Growing up, I hated brussel sprouts. Now, I love them roasted. I’d probably also like them pan-fried but haven’t tried that. Yours look wonderful!

I love roasted Brussels Sprouts they are my favorite. I tried to grow them 2X. The first year was a success. When I harvested them I pulled the whole plant up and stuffed it in the cellar, root and all. They stayed fresh forever. The second year was a failure. I really need to try again.
I am glad Tara is still around and doing a great job. I have been wondering how she was. :)
