The Indoor Garden

December 21st, 2016

This winter, the indoor garden in flourishing. I’ve always had houseplants, probably because my mom always had them scattered throughout the house. I have a dwarf banana that should be fruiting here soon, I’m pretty excited at the possibility. There are also a host of different things under the grow lights upstairs, herbs, African violets, orchids, ivy, lemons, and so much more.

Some of these plants are new, some are old. In fact one of our houseplants was on the stage during our wedding 18.5 years ago. Some plants come and go, I don’t like some, some don’t like the climate in the house. I enjoy having them around, not only for their air cleaning qualities, for for the beauty and greenery during the long cold winters here in Maine.

Do you have lots of houseplants? Do you have a favorite?

Susy, house plants just don’t seem to work for me. My house just doesn’t have a good place for them to get light in the Winter. I do enjoy seeing others that have them on their blog posts.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

    The dwarf bananas are adorable!

We don’t have too many indoor plants at home, we actually keep most at our offices at work! I have some rescued (read: clearance) phalenopsis from the grocery store that are doing well.

With toddlers and moving several times over the past few years, the number of houseplants I keep has really dwindled. I have a Christmas cactus my grandmother gave me about 5 or 6 years ago now, and an African violet my husband gifted our 4-year-old on her second birthday. A geranium moved here with us from Baltimore two years ago, and I brought this summer’s thyme inside when the weather changed – and that’s it. But you’re right – it’s nice to have the greenery during the Maine winter!

We have quite a few as well and a lot that we over winter in the house, so the collection grows quite a bit during the cold months…which, as you say, brightens up the house with much needed greenery!
I have a very large old jade plant that we’ve had…oh maybe 35-40 years. I was very sick one winter during chemotherapy and one day I was sitting in the living room, cat on my lap, just feeling awful and I happened to glance over at the window where my jade plant was sitting and it was in bloom. I can’t tell you how wonderful that was because it had never bloomed before then and hasn’t since. And that was about 20 years ago. I think it was trying to cheer me up.
    The power of plants! :)

I grew up with houseplants – I wish I could have my grandmother’s aloe and jade!! I have an angel wing begonia, two African violets (one that I split, actually), a random gift planter that we got when we bought our house three years ago, an orange tree, Meyer lemon tree, bay laurel and rosemary. Soon enough ill have all my seedlings started on the dining room table……
