So Close…

May 25th, 2017

I’m so close to getting all the seedlings planted. This past week I managed to get all the peppers and tomatoes in. They are filling out the side of the garden that was a cutting garden last summer. The soil hasn’t been improved as much as it has in the other half of the garden since this side has been left mostly fallow for the past few years.

I still have 5-6 flats of onions, leeks, and various flowers to get planted. Hopefully those will be planted today before a few days of rain. I always like to plant when we’re forecasted to have rain and a few cloudy days, I find it helps the plants deal with the shock of transplant better.

How’s your garden shaping up?

We’ve had a super rainy, cold period followed by 4 inches of rain in four days…so not much is in for warm-season plants! This weekend it’s all going to happen though.

    How big is your garden?
I have about 37 tomatoes in the ground, and another 32 to get in. Still need to get in about 50 peppers, sweet potatoes in a week or two, pumpkins, cucumbers.

As usual, however, I am flying by the seat of my pants! On schedule for some things, and behind on others!

I just love seeing photos of other people’s vegetable gardens. Yours looks great.

We got all the spring stuff (arugula, carrots, lettuce, peas, etc.) in awhile ago, and I spent some time thinning and weeding this week. Only the row of shelling peas came up–I suspect the snap pea seeds rotted in the ground during some cold, wet weather we had after planting–so the two-year-old helped me plant some beets and more lettuce in that row today. My husband planted some shallots and onions for green onions last week. I’m hoping to get the tomatoes in this weekend, and then the cucumbers and bush beans shortly thereafter.

Susy, everything is planted that needs planting. Now the task it to protect it with a wire fence and electric fence. Already I’m having trouble with some thing digging the plants out of the ground. They don’t eat the plants just dig them out of the ground. They hit four cucumber plants and two squash plants. The pumpkins will go on the heat mat soon. In about another week, the third planting of sweet corn will be planted.

We too have been struggling with excessive rain and very cool temperatures. We’ve passed the end of May hail, wind, and excessive rain typical weather and now it’s into the tending the plants period of gardening here in Nebraska.

Have a great day in the garden.
