Friday Favorite: Guinea Fowl Feathers

October 27th, 2017

We lost our last guinea fowl a few weeks ago, he sacrificed himself to a skunk to save the ducklings. Guinea fowl are loud, obnoxious birds, but they are fantastic to have around for protection. Their feathers are quite lovely, especially the pearl guineas with their polka dots.

I’ve always saved the feathers when I see nice ones floating around the gardens. I have this idea of making a wreath of sorts with a few deer antlers, guinea & turkey feathers, and perhaps a few dried sea holly flowers. Even if I never use them, I enjoy seeing my little stash when I come and go. I have some songbird feathers in my stash too, we lave loads of bluejays around here, so I find their feathers quite often.

Do you notice any song bird feathers in the garden?

We have guineas 4 males they have fallen in love with looking at themselves in the shining bumper of my daughters car. One in particular is always by her car when she is home he is named Narcissus. They are loud but they have fended off many predators like a wayward coyote at the end of the driveway once, and they let me know when strangers come in yard.

Susy, the only feathers I find in my garden is from wild turkeys. I’m not much of a person that does crafts. I’m more of a builder and repair things so I don’t save things like feathers.

Have a great fowl and wild animal wreath crafting day.

P.S. Sorry to hear about the brave Guinea Fowl that died doing instinctively what they do best. Where was Tara?

I love saving feathers. Right now I use them to make jewelry. This season, I had a juvenile cardinal who was generous enough to molt near our bird feeder- lovely dark gray & red feathers :) I looked forward to hunting for them each afternoon.

When I was a kid, my great-aunt had guineas. Mom would always use one of the guinea feathers to dust the innards of her sewing machine.
