Weather Station in the Garden

November 3rd, 2017

This Friday Favorite is for Mr Chiots. He’s been dreaming of getting a weather station for year, talking about it, researching, and planning it. Last month his dream came true when he finally got one.

There’s a little monitor indoors which shows us all the pertinent weather information. On Monday morning, it recorded a 50mph gust of wind during the big storm that rolled through. It tracks and stores all kind of information. So far, he’s enjoying it immensely. One of these days we will get around to putting a little widget in the sidebar of the blog that pulls in the information from this system.

Are you interested in the weather?

Susy, every gardener has to be interested in the weather even if it’s only a little bit. Weather is a fascinating force to be reckoned with this year. My area has been relatively nice compared to other parts of the country. Today the temperature will be middle 50s starting from a morning low of 30. Today’s plan is to repair fence at Terra Nova Gardens. The old chicken wire fence of six years has rusted completely into a pile of rubbish. The new fence will be welded steel.

I haven’t really saved seeds but I probably should start. I’m not sure about cross pollination because I plant cucumbers and squash together as well as other things that could cross pollinate. It’s a bit tricky when plants that can cross pollinate are planted close together.

I have a weather measuring station that doesn’t go to level that Brian’s does. Mine basically just measures temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. It was purchased many years ago for my mother in law that loves to track weather but didn’t want such a thing when all she needs to do is watch the weather channel. So I inherited it.

Have a great Maine saving seeds, weather station in the garden day.

So much of gardening success is dependent on the weather with all its vagaries. The weather station sounds like a lot of fun. I avail myself of the (somewhat) local TV station website, which I think does a great job with the weather forecast.
I have a jumbo rain gauge that was given to me. It is plastic, so I bring it inside for the winter. That is about the extent of my weather measurements here. My grandparents farmed, and they conscientiously recorded on the wall calendar the amount of rain they got. (I don’t recall them using irrigation at all, so rainfall was paramount.)
