Snow Day Activities

More snow, freezing rain, and ice rolled through yesterday. After office work and house cleaning, I started processing some of the many seeds I saved this past summer.
I’ve been developing better systems of processing them. Using a fork to remove the seeds from the dried flower heads is a huge finger saver, these seed heads are super prickly.
I’m looking forward to lots of tithonia in the garden this coming summer, hopefully in many other gardens as well (you can purchase these seeds over at Seeds & Sundries). Finding gardening chores that can be done when the snow is falling outside is always a nice way to brighten up those dark winter days!
What seeds did you save from the garden this year to plant next year?
Susy, I’m not the seed saver. A couple of my friends are the seed savers. They have saved squash and tomato and usually give me a few to grow. I don’t have that big of a garden to require a sack full of seeds. I have a total of 11 tomato plants and will be cutting back this year. There are just too many for me to process and even give away. I’m going to add some spaghetti squash to the garden this year.
Another reason I don’t really save seeds is the cross pollination contamination. I don’t really pay that much attention to what I plant next to what so Rutgers, Cherry, and Early Girl tomatoes all go next to each other. It’s a real hodgepodge of plants next to each other. Every thing is the same way. I grow 11 green peppers but there again it’s way too much. Sweet corn was over the top this year and I’m growing two beds less next year. My garden was actually too successful for me this year. How many gardeners can say that. So, in 2018, I’m cutting back some and not sure what I’ll do with the extra space. I guess that’s a good problem to have.
Have a great snow day garden activity. My snow day activity was unclogging a hair filled bathtub drain. Life gets messy some times.
