What a Find!

January 10th, 2018

I grew up in the woods, my dad’s family has a cabin on 60 acres in rural Ohio. When we were in the United States, we spend every weekend down there running through the woods, playing in the creek, and dragging home all sorts of bones and skeletons I found in the woods. As an adult, I have spent many hours hiking in the woods in all seasons (and have still been known to pick up skulls I find, most recently a porcupine skull). Winter is one of my favorite times to be in the woods, I snowshoe all winter long. Yesterday, while out on my lunchtime snowshoe, I found an antler shed.

It’s quite an amazing find. I’ve always heard about sheds and have heard of people finding them, but have never found one myself. Amazingly, it was quite close to the house. I’m not quite sure what I’ll do with it, most likely save it and put on the bookshelf.

Were you intrigued with nature as a child? Did you find bones/skeletons interesting?

Yes! I have always been drawn to natural things and have many items around the house like abandoned bird eggs, snake skin, and a variety of skulls. Part of the art I used to do was with ink & paper, using bones and skulls as models. It fascinates me how similar mammals can be on that level :)

Wow! That’s a beauty! And yes, what a find! I too loved nature as a child…still do! Speaking of porcupines, I have a dish of porcupine quills that someone “carefully” extracted and cleaned from a dead porcupine they came upon. They really are quite beautiful!
I’ve seen antlers used as hat or coat hooks on the wall and the same person that cleaned the quills uses them (antlers) as dog chews as they’re extremely hard and don’t break like bones.
Keep looking out there…you may even find a moose antler!

I have a pair of sheds on my mantel. Somehow my FIL found them both and was generous enough to pass them on to me. I still hope I’ll find at least one someday myself! My biggest natural collection is skulls. I have a few deer, a prized whole raccoon one (it’s hard to find with the jaw and teeth still intact) and a bunch that I don’t know. I think they’re so neat and not at all morbid. I love displaying them amongst my bookshelves.
