Seed Starting Station

February 5th, 2018

For my entire gardening career, I’ve started seeds on the kitchen table. It’s not a big deal, but here in this house we don’t have a light in the dining room. Thus we have a strand of Christmas lights. They’re OK for ambiance during dinner, but don’t offer quite enough light when starting small seeds.

This winter, I added a station upstairs for my mailing and other work projects. It happens to be PERFECT for seed starting as well. The counter height is perfect, no more stooping over. As long as I work during the day, the light is much better as well (though I still have a strand of lights for added light).
Overall, It’s the perfect space for, not only the work I do there, but for starting seeds as well. I’m hoping to add cork behind the tabletop for pinning up charts and other necessary items.

Where do you start your flats of seeds? Do you have a dedicated area for garden necessities?

Susy, this year I’m starting the seeds on a desk in my cimputer room on the heat mat. They will get a two to three days on the heat mat then down in the basement under the grow lights for the rest of their inside life. Right now I’m just testing out the setup and have planted several different seeds to check the viability and to actually see if the set up will work. The Marigolds popped up in two days and the water melson five days. Nothing else is up just yet so perhaps it’s time to throw away those open seed packs from last year and perhaps a couple more years ago.

Have a great seed starting day.

We are lucky enough to have several greenhouses on the property. I have a small greenhouse where I store supplies and start seeds. It’ll be getting filled up soon.

Good luck on your starts this year!

I have added two LED grow lights to a basement workshop where I have built counter height tables. I’m currently experimenting with growing tomatoes, horse radish and some other greens during the winter but I’ll be starting seed flats soon.
