Back Up Again

February 28th, 2018

Years ago, my mom gave me this stitched clock. She made it when she was pregnant with me and living in the Amazon jungle in San Jose del Guaviare in Colombia, S.A. (perhaps some of you don’t know I was born in Colombia). I believe it was a kit that she purchased.

I’ve always loved it, for a lot of reasons. It’s quaint, it’s cute, it’s handmade. My dad made the frame/box. It has a very questionably attached piece of glass in the front, the wire is held on by small nails. I would like to figure out how to clean it, though I’m not sure if I can. It seems to have been glued to a piece of plywood before being mounted.

In our home in Ohio, it had a special spot in our living room. When we moved to Maine, I wasn’t sure where to hang it, so it was stored in the spare bedroom. This past weekend I finally decided to hang it in the dining room. It’s not the perfect spot, but it’s better than nothing. I love being able to see it as I walk by. Because of the placement I see it about 50 times a day and it makes me smile. Reminds me of my mom.

Do you have any family treasures that you keep in prominent places so you can see them frequently?

super cool! I love family heirloom stuff like this that has a story. That’s cool that your mom and dad made it so long ago!

Susy, yup, I have a special picture on a small wall shelf I made and hung on the wall. It’s a wedding picture. My wife was so beautiful and I was this wild long haired mountain man looking guy. Every time I walk by the picture I have to wonder. What was she thinking to marry a guy like that. It was an awesome marriage and I was blessed to have her for 23 years in my life. She was a decorator and covered the walls with pictures and craft things she made. Much of that stuff is still on the walls. She had enough stuff to cover all the walls many times over so what she wasn’t using on the walls was stored away in the basement. When she tired of the decorations on the walls which was about every year, she would take them all off the walls and store them away and bring out the ones that were stored and arrange them on the walls. It gave her the satisfaction of changing the decor without costing a lot. Well, we still had to add a few new pieces with each change. We would spend a whole day getting every thing just right in a room including furniture position changes. She was a person that just couldn’t visualize what the room would look like in her head. So we would get it arranged the way she thought would look nice. It was never right the first time or usually for many times after that. It would usually take a whole day just to get things right in a room. Then she would take a week or so of tweaking the final touches.

It’s some of the best memories of her that I have and am reminded of her by looking at so many things on the walls.

Have a great Mom memory day 50 times a day.
