Hello Luna

July 9th, 2018

It’s Luna Moth season here in Maine, I’ve managed to see four in the past week. Last night, two were on the chicken coop when I went up to gather eggs. I’ve seen them before, but only here and there throughout my life. In fact, I’ve probably seen more this week than I have in the rest of my life put together.

In the North, the season for these beauties is short, only about a week. Did you know that the adult moths don’t eat, they only live for about 7 days. It’s no wonder I’ve seen so many, I guess it’s the season for them to be out making the next generation of moths.

Do you see Luna Moths in your area?

No Luna Moths here. But I was blessed to have been visited by a Zebra Swallowtail, which is one of our very rare Swallowtails.

Alas, no where near as many butterflies in our garden this year. Very cyclic, so I am not worried for the future. But I miss the beauty. Last year my zinnia patches were often covered in 10 or more species of butterflys/moths at any one time

Back in the spring we saw a bunch when we did an overnight backpacking trip in our local national forest. I too had never seen that many at one time. Must be a big year for them!

I put a direct link to that post if you’d like to read it. I was also sad to see they don’t eat or drink either!

I’ve only ever seen one in my life and that was four years ago. They are beautiful.

Susy, ha, yeah, nothing but cabbage fly moths here. I haven’t seen many butterflies this year. Maybe it’s because of the very cold winter and spring we had. But then I don’t really plant any thing to draw them in.

Have a great Luna moth day.
